TRAIN LIKE A PRO.

No matter what position you play on the pitch, your first touch is the most important part of your game.

Watch this video and you’ll see the difference between a player whose first touch takes the ball out of their feet and one whose first touch gets stuck underneath them. That one moment can be the difference between keeping possession, creating space, or losing the ball.

As a player who has always been smaller than most on the pitch, my first touch and my ability to think two or three moves ahead have always helped me escape tight areas and beat opponents.

Look at Bernardo Silva. He isn’t the strongest or the fastest, but what separates him is his football IQ. He sees the game four or five steps ahead of everyone else. He relies on his first touch, close control, and low centre of gravity to get out of the tightest situations.

A lot of academy coaches look for players who are athletic, powerful, and physically dominant. Yet time and time again, players like Lamine Yamal prove that football is about much more than strength. He isn’t dominating because he’s the biggest or strongest. He’s dominating because he can manipulate the ball, think five steps ahead, and play without fear.

Look at some of the greatest players to ever play the game (apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the exception).

Messi. Neymar. Pirlo. Xavi. Iniesta. Busquets. Modrić. Yamal. Fàbregas. Cazorla. Özil.

The list goes on.

They all have one thing in common: an elite first touch. Most of them weren’t the strongest, and many weren’t the fastest. What they all had was exceptional football IQ and the ability to control the game with their first touch.

My advice to every young footballer: spend as much time developing your football brain and your technical ability as you do working on your physical attributes. Football is played with your feet, but it’s won with your mind.

Good to have a session with the boys! Good luck in your new season go smash it 🙏🏽⚽️

Being a fullback or a winger your first touch is very important to set up the next phase of what you want to do.

Working closely with professional athletes on their first touch and thinking before receiving the ball is 🔑.

Having always been not blessed with height, my first touch and thinking before receiving the ball have always been my get out clause. I could not afford to be a step behind players because of how physical the games got.

Best players in world football like Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Lionel Messi and many more rely so much on their first touch and being ahead of the game because they lack the physicality.
