Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

After one flat tyre in a Lagos Uber and a surprisingly comfortable train ride, we arrived at this 137-meter rock, which has more than one story to tell.

During the 19th-century tribal wars, the Olumo Rock served as a fortress. Here, the Egba people found a safe shelter below and vast views above to see the enemies coming. For this protection and many other reasons, the rock is considered highly sacred, with its patron spirit venerated as an orisha in the Yoruba religion. In fact, its very name, Olumo, comes from Olu, meaning God, and Mo, meaning moulded. The rock that God moulded, literally. Some even say it’s a living god itself.

Holy places like this make me miss Nigeria. That and the beautiful girls who would ask to take photos with me, of course.

And now is the perfect time for the Alyssa shout-out. I met this lady in Tunisia, and our schedules just so happened to cross again in Nigeria. Talk about Olumo; she was my absolute rock, and without her fearless positivity, I probably would’ve just hidden in my hotels all day. Top travel buddy, 10 out of 10, would recommend her vibe to everybody.

Speaking of vibes, my new book, Jesus Was a Shapeshifting Alien, has just been published! Get it while it’s hot!
