As we pass the spring equinox, and enter the final quarter of 2026, we sit, held within Hall of Ceremonies, the show which marks a year of exhibitions at PEG. We invite you to join us on Wednesday evening of the 7th of October to breathe in acknowledgement of this moment. Anthea will guide us through an hour of movement open to all levels. Anthea has been teaching yoga for over 5 years, with this life-long movement practice being deeply intertwined with her arts practice. As her sculpture Magdalene holds and is held by the gallery, so too will she hold us through this vinyasa flow, closing our practice with a sound bath of Tibetan singing bowls. Koha Entry (suggested amount $10-15) 5.30pm, class starts 6pm. Capacity is limited so please come early to reserve your spot, have a cup of tea, settle in and unroll your mat. BYO mat and optional blanket.

Anthea Tucker Baillie has created a small edition to accompany her sprawling work Magdalene in Hall of Ceremonies. Magdalene: Domestic Fragments Edition of 6: 2 bronze, 2 sterling silver, 2 9ct gold An invitation, extended beyond the gallery floor and into the home. Each edition arrives with an instruction card and a 2 gram piece of wax, ready to be pressed into a sweet spot of domestic life, the crack in the front step, the corner of a cabinet rubbed pale by decades of passing hands, the dip in a doorframe where a dog has leant for a scratch. Any small sweet spot of precious devotion and everyday life will do. The moulded wax returns to the gallery, where Tucker Baillie casts it in metal and completes the work — bronze, sterling silver, or 9ct gold, mirroring the recesses of the gallery floor that gave rise to Magdalene itself. What began as a mapping of one worn, ceremonial space becomes, edition by edition, a mapping of many private ones: the fragments of home that hold the marks of a life lived there. Bronze: $220 Sterling silver: $605 9ct gold: $3,030 DM to enquire! @_anthe___

Prostrate, by Roro, is a fictional text accompanying Hall of Ceremonies. An artwork in its own right, the text offers another way into the exhibition, a sacred fiction that extends its world into language. Copies of Prostrate are available from PEG for a small koha, or you are welcome to sit with a copy in the gallery while contemplating the exhibition. Ngā mihi nui to Roro for offering these divine words to Hall of Ceremonies. @roroschach Cover design by the inimitable @hexlodge x

'Hall of Ceremonies' opened at @peg_gallery_ on Friday and I spent Saturday teaching people how to play Yut nori. I want to honour the people who were involved in this project. I worked very closely with @sudi_dargipour of @dilana_nz to create these handwoven rugs. She shared these photos that the artisans took of the rugs in process and offered some beautiful reflections: "When I first heard the story of families and friends gathering to play from Steven, I knew this rug had to be a kilim. It is the oldest way of making a rug in Iran, older even than the knotted rugs, and it has always belonged to people, not palaces. In Iran the kilim (gelim) was woven by nomadic tribes on simple looms they carried between summer and winter pastures. Nothing was drawn out in advance. The master weavers worked from memory, and the textile became the way they told their stories. I grew up watching my grandmother and aunties weave, and they would let us children add some of the colours, sometimes on the border, sometimes a tiny triangle in the middle. That is why old kilims are full of asymmetry and happy mistakes. You find hidden codes meant for lovers, and the colours of a motif can record the harvest of that year. The technique is part of the story too. A kilim has no pile. Each colour is woven in its own section, and when the weaver reaches the edge of a shape, she leaves that colour behind and moves on to the next. Where two colours meet, small slits open between them, giving crisp edges and the quiet signature of a hand-made piece. These rugs are woven with a cotton warp and a weft of 100% New Zealand wool. For me, kilim was the natural partner to this design and its ritual. Across centuries, and across cultures, we have passed our stories on in two ways at least: through the games we play together, and through the textiles we make with our hands." I honour the skill and knowledge of the weavers. I give thanks to the people, places, and traditions that have come together to create this work. We are never individuals acting alone, we are the embodiement of all who came before and we must work towards being good ancestors to those who will come after.
