Our recent show in Seoul — ‘A full moon is a half moon’, with Ash Roberts & Nadia Yaron — in @financialtimes’ feature on the enduring allure of the Korean hanok, alongside Arumjigi’s Frieze exhibition and Do Ho Suh’s retrospective at MMCA. Honoured to be in such company.

With gratitude to @heathcoteedwin, @financialtimes, @mv___consulting and of course, @_ash_roberts @nadiayaron & @aegahun.

francisgallery In these works, Ash Roberts uses gold leaf inspired by the aesthetics of wabi-sabi and kintsugi which regard impermanence and wear not as flaws to hide, but as the hallmarks of beauty. The Korean language has no exact word for wabi-sabi, nor for kintsugi, but sobakmi, the grace of the simple and humble, comes close. The same term describes the revered Joseon moon jar, dalhangari, prized for being unadorned, its natural asymmetry formed from the two halves of the jar.

Field notes from Seoul Art Week:

Seoul vibrates differently. It has that aesthetic, elegant edge, but with a mischief to it that keeps it bright, never solemn. It's a sprawling city of very distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own pulse — that's what multiplies the feeling: cross into a new district and the register shifts entirely, and that variety is what makes it feel like there's always more to discover.

The art on offer is overwhelming — museums, exhibitions, galleries everywhere. Frieze had a very wide-ranging selection; within that, what pulled me in most was textile art and figurative painting with a dreamy edge, somewhere between the oneiric and the expressionist.

Two institutional shows stayed with me: Do Ho Suh at the MMCA, and "In Other Space" at Leeum — alongside its ancient art collection, which carries an unexpected warmth. Gallery nights followed the city's own neighbourhood circuit: night 1 in Hannam, night 2 in Cheongdam, night 3 in Samcheong. Packed, buzzing, a strong social scene as much as an artistic one — crossing paths with the same faces night after night. Highlights included Yang Jungwook at P21, Ed Atkins at Gladstone, and Yulia Iosilzon at Foundry Seoul.

Thank you to every visitor who came to experience the show this past week, and to our two exhibiting artists, Ash Roberts & Nadia Yaron.

Gratitude also to @aegahun @rakkojaeofficial for hosting us, and to @artcouriersla for exhibition support.

Couldn’t have asked for a better first showing in Seoul — looking forward to the next!

It’s been well over 12 years since I first got in touch with @rosaliapark

So much has changed since she moved her base from Bath to LA, but that instinct for knowing what to show, how, where and to whom has remained. If anything, it feels more natural, more assured now.

And I still love that instinct 🤍

During Art Week, I only made time for the exhibitions I really wanted to see. Today, I finally spent an afternoon with dear @the.leeesis seeing a show I had been wanting to see for a long time.

‘ A Full Moon Is a Half Moon ’ brings together @_ash_roberts and @nadiayaron inside Aegahun ,a century - old Korean hanok.

Light, material and time become a quiet thread between two very different practices — Roberts working with colour and gold leaf, Yaron with stone, metal and wood.

The hanok is more than a setting. Its courtyard, timber and hanji screens become part of the conversation, slowly revealing themselves as the works do.

And then, to have @koobohnchang 선생님 walk through the door too…🫠

It felt like a long letter finally coming to life.
Happy moment. Very✨✨✨
