I know my weekends look like it’s just eating and more eating and look, no surprises: it’s really just that. But a standout find was this bowl of Penang-style assam laksa I randomly punted on while waiting for my Nasi Lemak to be ready (was also certified delicious). My father was born in Penang but raised for the most part in Sydney, so my tastebuds have always somehow tethered to the cuisine there. Unlike Katong and nyonya-style laksa which Singapore is famous for, assam laksa is tangier, punchier and spicier. It does not have the rich decadence of Singapore laksa because of the absence of coconut milk, but instead is crowned with a generous assortment of fresh herbaceous greens and torch ginger flower (bunga kantan). The broth is also built upon a base of boiled or poached mackerel, plus tamarind for that sweet/sour finish. This rendition was close to a 5/5. Oh, and then my sister indulged me in a very delightful cardamom bun she carted back from Melbourne (also a 5/5). Cherry on top was this raspberry cream mochi my angel Natalie gave me (5/5). Is that what Julia Child meant? That the people who love to eat are always the best people?????

@_beamworld has put together a lovely experiential space; we brought a large steel-top counter, plus a fleet of low tea tables.

The tables were made for tea sessions, and for stacking into shelves after for space-efficient storage.
