SARAthon was another epic year where 70+ people attended and the quality of beer really stepped up with some blasts from the past! A lot of 10+ year-old beers, most notably To The Choir which hasn’t shown up at a SARAthon in 10 years. Also some decade old Loons and plenty of magnums came out, Utopias, mead, and barleywines. Of course the food was amazing and Luca‘s paired pizza menu was a big hit. We tapped a one-off cask of Te & Timber made for us by Sante Adairius with te de limon and lemon zest which was very tasty and refreshing. 137~ bottles plus a firkin! Cheers to all the folks who made the trip, some as far as NJ and Chicago! 🍻

It’s been a while 🐐

A blend of Fantôme saison brewed in 2017 with 2 and 3 year old lambic and grapes.

Bottled April 2019.

In early September 2018 we went on a trip to Italy and we returned with a beautiful harvest of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica from winery La Stoppa in Emilia Romagna and Moscato Bianco from Ezio Cerruti in Piemonte.

For the final blend of this beer we added some more brightness by blending in a lambic with 2017 harvest of Muscaris grapes from Haspengouw.

The tannins and peppery notes from extended skin maceration together with the floral aromas of the grapes work synergistically with the phenols and esters of the saison adding to the complexity and balance of this blend.

Saturday share. Zenne B1 stole the show, had heard it was over the hill but cork popped, oxi notes nicely balanced - drinking stupidly well and had legs still imo. Mia a treat to revisit - top 5 bokke easy, FPK also doing well. Very fun to try a bunch of single barrel zenne blends - 57 my personal fave. 2012 Girardin black, Mills Jenners B1 and 50N b4 other highlights but no whiffs across the board

Bokke Gueuze for New Avenues
I don’t know where my expectations were for this bottle, but I was not expecting this amazing cornucopia of barrel flavors. I guess I should have known Raf would coax some incredible notes of vanilla, sherry, and baking spices, given his amazing touch with other Oloroso barrel aged lambics. However, time and the more subtle fruit notes from the Port barrel have given this blend an incredible roundness that layers beneath the complexity. A truly phenomenal gueuze that I’m glad I had the opportunity to try. #gueuze #lambic #bokke @_bokke_

Bokke Pjassel (2017)
I got really lucky with this bottle. A lot of the fruited Bokke bottles released during this period have tended toward becoming quite acidic. This bottle of Pjassel, a blend of lambics aged on Vineyard Peaches, had a warm, almost vanilla quality on the backend. It was pleasantly acidic, without losing any drinkability. I don’t think I’d age this much longer, but at almost eight and a half years past its bottling, it was still near its peak. #lambic #stonefruit @_bokke_

Cantillon Initiale BB & Bokke Persika Kardemumma
Cardamom is a pretty unusual adjunct. For this side by side I opened up two beers that featured it. The Cantillon Initiale BB was brewed for a local Belgian restaurant. Its cardamom was layered and complex, with fairly floral aromatics backed up by a pleasantly bitter finish. Bokke’s take was more reminiscent of a pie. It layered the cardamom over two different types of peaches. The resulting marriage of flavors added depth to the quenching refreshment of the stone fruit.
