Authentic Pilates was never initially created for mass fitness classes. When it is treated like one, it can lose many of the principles and benefits that make Pilates different from a regular workout.

Pilates is about reeducating the body and teaching people how to breathe, engage, and move in ways that are specific to their body and needs. Sometimes the smallest cue or adjustment can completely change which muscles are working and help create better balance, control, and coordination throughout the WHOLE body.

I am not saying group Pilates classes are bad. I teach plenty of group classes myself and think they absolutely have their place. But I will say that the people who also take private sessions usually see the biggest and fastest changes.

At the end of the day, Pilates is not about how many exercises you can get through. It is about the quality of your movement, and you can only truly learn what quality movement looks and feels like for YOUR body when someone is able to watch you closely and teach you one-on-one.

Group classes are then a place to maintain that progress and see whether you can apply what you have been practicing in your privates without having someone cue and correct you through every movement.

If you have never done Pilates before and want to truly experience its benefits, invest in at least a few private sessions before joining group classes. Your body will thank you!

I will forever be that friend who puts everyone onto Classical Pilates!

Despite being a contemporary-trained instructor, I believe it’s important to know where the method came from and understand the true purpose behind Pilates. It’s not a HIIT workout, it’s not endless pulsing, and it’s not aimless movement to music. It’s a system that uses multiple apparatuses (not just the reformer) to improve mind-body connection, refine movement patterns, increase mobility while reinforcing stability, and just create overall greater control in your strength.

I truly believe Pilates should be a part of everybody’s training routine. It teaches you how to move with intention and how to truly understand your body.

So yes, when my friends tell me they want to see what all the hype around Pilates is, you better believe I’m taking them back to where it all started.

Classical Pilates was my first ever taste of what it felt like to truly be present in the bodymind & I’ll never get over it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This work is deep medicine for the nervous system, mindset, capacity, & embodied knowledge of movement principles in general.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This work is restorative & strengthening all at the same time. &&&& this is exactly why classical Pilates holds deep through line in @theembodymind_method Pilates class format.

Who’s participating in #marchmatness & dropping into their bodyminds daily? I would love to hear your favorite exercise in the comments! The roll over is definitely one of mine.
