Chris Herbert :: Grisaille (Room40) https://igloomag.com/reviews/chris-herbert-grisaille-room40 #igloomag #reviews @daybeforeus.music "Chris Herbert’s Grisaille is a haunting journey through grainy ambient textures, fractured memories and shadowy soundscapes where beauty emerges from the dust of decaying dreams."

Cool somewhat NSM news: our buddy/compadre/sound brother @_chrisherbert has a new, and beautiful album out on @room40shoots called Grisaille. We contributed live material to the track “The Matador.” This record is insanely cool and you should pick it up on this Bandcamp Friday. More NSM news in the offing including a new LP. Much love from us to you!

The Showcase Gallery is open til 5pm today for the torn, found notes exhibition 'Don't Please Tell Anybody', please pop down to the Jubilee Centre, 130 Pershore Street and ring me for entry. Copies of the new book featuring around 50 of the handwritten fragments (also titled 'Don't Please Tell Anybody') are now available for purchase at £8, for now only at the gallery. Also shown here are three (untorn) notes found on my walk into city centre this morning. Shopping lists are common but are occasionally intriguing, study notes are usually dry but it's interesting that some things are still handwritten...the real discovery today was 'To Herleen From Tanveer 💗' which will remain unseen here on Insta but forms part of a growing live collection, updated daily and viewable at the gallery. Check out too (slow) progress on the showcase torque, formed piece by piece from dropped earrings, brooches and other lost jewellery found in the streets of Brum. Also open Mon 6 July - Wed 8 July 12-5pm + Thu 9 July 12-3pm. #BirminghamArt #BirminghamCulture #BirminghamEvents #BirminghamGalleries #BirminghamStreets

So today, the 30th March, officially marks the 20th anniversary of Low Point, the often ramshackle record label I have run for all of that time. LP051 to LP077 (2012 to present) You might have noticed that at this stage, the timeline becomes a bit stretched. Only half the amount of titles were released over twice as many years as the whole of the previous catalogue, as inevitable work/life pressures meant that the label often had to take a bit of a back seat. However, it’s fair to say that some of Low Point’s most ambitious projects were released during this period. Ex-Easter Island Head continued their run of amazing albums, including a studio recording of the 13 guitar ‘Large Electric Ensemble’ which brought together many Low Point alumni into one space. Kogumaza’s ‘Fugues’ was also the labels first (and so far, only) double LP release. There was also a series of curated cassette releases, which allowed the label to once again extend its artist base. At this moment in time, it does feel like the label has gone full circle, as the individual, handmade artwork of our most recent album ‘Loops’ harks back to the some of aesthetic of the very first releases. A huge thanks to all the artists who put their trust in me to release their music and those who contributed their art, photography and design skills to help make each record, cd or cassette look as great as they do. Extra special thanks to everyone who has bought records and supported the label over the last 20 years, as without you this would have been impossible. More news soon. Onwards and upwards! x

Something none of you have been waiting for, part 2 of 20 years of Low Point. On a slightly embarrassing note, it appears that I’m missing copies of nearly half the releases featured in this post (including three of my own), so apologies to those not featured, particularly the Strategy release as the cover art for that one is banging. I’m definitely not a natural archivist… LP011 to LP030 (2007 to 2009) Looking back, I’m amazed how many releases happened in such a short space of time - there was obviously a sense of momentum forming. This period also saw artists from across the world joining the roster, with Sia (Australia), Rutger & Frans (Netherlands), Paul and Alex (both USA) being the first wave, soon followed by Mariska & Robert (Netherlands), Cameron (Australia), Fabio (Italy), Peter (Denmark), then finally Will & Dani (USA). A strong sense of co-operation was also apparent as three of the releases were artists participating in a split, taking the side of a vinyl record each and another three were collaborations. This sense of building partnerships was never more apparent on my album ‘Aversions’, where I reached out to many who had already released music on the label to reimagine/remix my music. Whilst most of the releases could (lazily) be lumped into the ‘ambient/drone’ category, there were a few curveballs being thrown too. Felix contributed their hushed, enigmatic song craft on the split 7” with Chris Herbert and Strategy’s 12” EP ‘Electric Soup’ wouldn’t have been out of place on the Warp Records catalogue…

March 2025 marks the 20th Anniversary of Low Point, the home brew record label I’ve sporadically run during that time. Because of this, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to trawl the archive, reminisce and give props to everyone who has contributed their blood, sweat and tears over the years. So come with me as we go on a journey from cottage industry to flavour of the month (briefly) and back again to obscurity. LP001 to LP010 (2005 to 2007) Full disclosure, it was never really my intention or aspiration to set up a record label as such. The earliest releases on Low Point served mainly as a private press for my own music, with the name of the label and cat nos. added as a bit of an in-joke. However, and perhaps inevitably, friends and peers operating in the same musical sphere soon got dragged in to the fray. Cdrs burned on a home computer were the media of choice at this stage, with homemade covers made out of cut up photographs, wallpaper samples and vellum paper eventually giving way to digital printing once we got access to a friends fancy digital lithograph. The split 8” lathe cut record is perhaps the standout here, which was individually manufactured by the legendary Peter King in New Zealand. Peter was pretty old school when it came to communication methods, which lead to some funny looks at work when I asked my boss at the Council if I could use the office fax machine to make an international call to send through my order. The release also included a Cdr with extended versions of both tracks, possibly as an insurance policy to the overall fidelity of the lathe-cut record. The cool design work for the insert was carried out by @wayoutisthewayout and then it was packaged in a white paper bag like when you buy some fruit at the local greengrocers - possibly a nod to the Obscene Baby Auctions comp 12” which came out at a similar time?

In all the excitement about the upcoming Navigator LP I almost forgot this weeks radio tracklisting! That would have been a criminal offence as we have a guest presenter - ambient composer, Kranky (and WSR) recording *artiste*, master selector and all round excellent egg Mr Chris Herbert! Look at that tracklisting. All gold from The Herb (as we call him). Listen now on GWS and Mixcloud, linkinbio! #chrisherbert #wrongspeedrecords

It's Monday. Everything is covered in a layer of ice. I would simply enjoy not being cold. However, some fire by way of Foxy Digitalis might help? First, up a premiere! Frayed imagery and blurred tones swirl into symbiotic shapes in the opening breaths of Ogive's “Spectral Flux.” Check out the new album from this duo of Chris Herbert & Elias Merino on Room 40. Second, One of the best mixes we've ever published, from Moldova's Errorless Bird. A cache of music mostly from Eastern Europe w/ Tzii, Moljebka Pvlse, Martyna Basta (w/ claire rousay), Rosso Polare, Emilian Gatsov, & more. Foxy Digitalis link in the tree. New Songs of Our Lives w/ Sarah Hennies tomorrow (or, if you are a member of the Patreon, new one w/ Jeremiah Chiu) 🥳
