2 YEARS OF CQQL 🍾 in these two years, we’re 16 releases deep (and counting), have a few weekenders/tours under our belt, heard our tunes on the FM airwaves, dj’ed for some great crowds, discovered sick record shops, made new friends, linked with new artists and dj’s, started a new radio show, and more we can’t even think of! we have so much love for y’all keeping us going, so here’s to many more releases (and all of the above) for years to come ❣️

Mick Mullane | Completely
🇬🇧 1988

One of the great things about visiting family is the opportunity to hit up one of my old local record stores and I am thrilled with what I uncovered on my most recent visit ⛏️

This hard to find 12” single from Mick Mullane entitled ‘Completely’ was released on Legal Light Records in 1988.

It is worth mentioning that this lovely late 80’s soul number was written and produced by Clive Gardiner (from the group McKenzie & Gardiner who released the amazing boogie track ‘From Time’ in 1983).

What is particularly fascinating about this copy here is that it includes a humorous message from Mick himself written on the inner sleeve! Swipe to see what he wrote 👀👉 Simon and Hettie if you’re out there I hope you know your old record is very much being cared for in its new home and is certainly not being used as an ashtray 😂🚬

McKenzie & Gardiner - Timestamp: The Collection - CQQL Records - 2022

So many treats on this bad boy!

Earl McKenzie & Clive Gardiner are two lifelong friends who grew up together in Southall, West London, UK. Their mutual love of soul and funk inspired them to form a 7-piece band THE CLASS OF 78 while still at school and years later became a duo McKenzie & Gardiner. They made their first demos in 1983 followed soon after by a 12" single ”FROM TIME” which became a highly sought-after Boogie-Funk Rare Groove. This collection of unreleased demos from the early 1980s was first released digitally in 2013 and then expanded with 3 new additions in 2020. An 8-track limited edition vinyl version released in 2014 sold out immediately. Now, the full 15 track selection of demos have been remastered and packaged in full as the “Timestamp: The Collection”, a 2xLP with lyrics and liner notes and double cassette release.

Makenzie & Gardiner "From Time". Excellent UK boogie classic released in 1983 that's hard to beat. Be sure to check out their compilation of unreleased material put out several years ago as well as a more recent 45 release that contains a stripped down version of this tune. Still amazing.

Today the definitive McKENZIE & GARDINER compilation "TIMESTAMP : THE COLLECTION" is available from @junorecords UK, a week ahead of its scheduled release date (linktree links in bio). For the first time ever, all 15 tracks we recorded in the 1980s are available as either a double vinyl album or double cassette from the Encino, California based label @cqqlrecords. Some of these tracks have never been released on vinyl before. Both formats are strictly limited editions, so they won't be available for long.

Kudos to the curator at Juno for these 'silky' release notes 😆.

"McKenzie & Gardiner are a UK-based electro, funk and boogie duo still active on the scene. Before the turn of the millennium, they had only released one single, 'From Time' - an impeccable British boogie tune that meditates on the passing of time and its effects on an important romantic relationship. Ironically, a lot of time has passed since then, and the pair's obsession with time doesn't seem to have stopped them from waiting it out. Now, after honing their craft for so long, we finally get their first official album, 'Timestamp', revealing the official and mastered versions of precious songs that otherwise existed only as raw demos."

Thanks @djrandyellis and @the.alaia for your labor of love 🙏🏻.

#tbt TBT32- FOOTBALL CRAZY

The new football season has started and there's a World Cup coming soon in less than 100 days. Growing up at school together, Earl and I were crazy about music and football. Some things never change ⚽

This pic is from our High School football squad aged 13. Earl was a quality supercool left back - he played for the county and district teams and had trials with professional clubs Chelsea and QPR. I was the 'target man' centre forward and grabbed a bunch of goals and assists along the way.

From Southall to Encino, Los Angeles 🤩

Waaaay back in the day Earl and I needed some lo-fi pics to send out with our demo cassettes, so we went to the photobooth in the Woolworths store in Southall Broadway (where the neon lights shine bright 😉). Now these same pics have been shared by Encino label @cqqlrecords and I've reposted their note here

"thanks everyone who has been preordering! We've been taking note of shops that want to get in on this too 📣 We’re releasing McKenzie & Gardiner’s From Time (Groove Version) on 7" for the first time EVER(!) backed with the OG anthem “From Time” 📣 Available on limited edition brown vinyl or standard black vinyl 🎨 by @the.alaia"
