In this episode, I sit down with @_coraallan_ at her studio in Tāmaki Makaurau.

You’ll hear her talk about how important materials are in facilitating a connection to family and Niuean community, not least of all, tea towels, the nuances of sharing knowledge of the hiapo tradition, her very personal, but almost unintentional beginnings, of a hiapo practice that now defines who she is, and, I think one of the most unexpected, but fantastic and romantic answers I have ever got to that final question I always ask.

2. Flora and Fauna study, 2020
3. Framing Tamanuiterā I – III (cyanotype on hiapo), 2025
4. Ko Ao Ko Ao Ko Aotearoa, 2023
5. Mauri I (from the series Mauri), 2023

As Cora-Allan’s exhibition 'Recording Mauri: Moments of Light and Earth' is displayed in its final week, we're taking the moment to reflect back on our Foundation Patron's Preview and opening event for this beautiful exhibition.

Cora-Allan (Ngāpuhi, Ngātitumutumu and Niue: Alofi, Liku) was introduced to our Patrons by City Gallery Wellington Foundation Trustee Alison Bartley, before we stepped into the exhibition space. As Cora-Allan's first gallerist, Alison's connection to the artist added a unique perspective to a very special experience for our group.

It was thrilling to hear Cora-Allan explain her processes, with every element of her work made by hand. From extracting soot to make her ink, to the creation of her hiapo (Niuean barkcloth) and sourcing pigments from the whenua via soil, clay and rock sediments. Her artmaking connecting to traditional knowledge systems, from both Niue and Aotearoa.

'Recording Mauri: Moments of Light and Earth' is on view at the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa until 23 May.

Don't miss City Gallery Wellington's last exhibition in this location, before returning home to Te Ngākau Civic Square this October.

Through the lens of his Kodak Chamera digital camera, Chaske-Waste, age 9, son of exhibiting artist Cora-Allan, captured his perspective of the Recording Mauri: Moments of Light and Earth opening day event.

“I like watching to see if people like the artwork,” and “I wonder what they are thinking...”.

In our latest blog, Cora-Allan and her tamariki, Chaske-Waste (9) and Wakiya-Wacipi (6), delve into what creativity looks like in their whanau.

“If you could create anything in the world what would it be?”

“A big giant cloud made out of gold.”
- Wakiya-Wacipi, 6 years old

Sometimes the best perspectives start with an imagination that knows no limits. In our recent blog, Through Their Eyes, we chat to Cora-Allan (@_coraallan_) and share musings from a recent kōrero with her tamariki around creativity and mahi toi in their whānau.

Exhibiting artist Cora-Allan brings generations of ancestral knowledge from both Aotearoa and Niue into her contemporary art practice.

Driven by her sustainable approach to art-making, Cora-Allan sources many of her materials from the natural world. From the bark used to make hiapo, to pigments made from whenua sourced around ngā motu, these materials carry their own mauri with them.

Recording Mauri: Moments of Light and Earth is on now at National Library of New Zealand until 23 May 2026.

Grateful is an understatement 💛

A huge fakaaue lahi mahaki to @_coraallan_ 🫶🏽🇳🇺✨ for generously donating a stunning Tiputa Fifine to support our @pacificachch fundraiser.

This is more than a raffle prize ~ it’s a Tāoga, carrying the stories and strength of our people.

We are so thankful to have this level of support behind our journey to Niue and fakaaue lahi to our @pacificachch sis @sinamulitalo for sharing our fundraising efforts far and wide 🌺🇳🇺✨
