CLAY AND THE BODY
Guest teaching at IKKG – Institute for Ceramic and Glass Art in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany

Two years ago Tontouristen collective was invited by Prof. Markus Karstieß for a three-week guest teaching. We developed the course „Clay and the Body“ with the objective to find new ways to express the relation between site, material and the body. As part of this, we collaborated with performance artist and researcher Dr. Nathalie S. Fari who contributed with her experience to the program.

The students explored how the body can sense, respond to and reflect place through observing, documenting, mapping and performing. Working in groups, they developed site-specific interventions that engaged with the embodied history of specific sites, such as the historic Kannofen, the renaturalized clay pit in Vallendar and the European Pottery Market in Höhr-Grenzhausen. The students used photography and video to trace their gestures and actions. The final results of the course were presented in form of an exhibition at the Kannofen.

Besides, we also visited the clay production site of the company Witgert, where we went for a guided tour trough the whole production process. We also made a stop at the nearby and biggest clay mine in Meudt.

Thank you IKKG (Markus, Nora, Lena, Jens), Nathalie, Firma Witgert and especially all the students for your presence, care and curiosity! 🫶☀️ We had a wonderful time with you! We were also happy to meet @goldenluckydean during their residency @neuerkunstvereinmittelrhein and @elmarferdinandhermann

@o.uju_so @katarina__potapova @mina.vaezzz @_dereke_ @joh_tensie @patrick_inthesky
@nathalie.fari @markus.karstiess @nora.arrieta.sculpture
@ikkg.art_students @ikkg_art_institute

#IKKG #clayandthebody #tontouristen #teaching #ceramics

MA1 CRAFT (ceramic art, jewellery art and textile art) at HDK Valand warmly invites you to our group exhibition FEELING MATTER at Galleri Box.

Feeling Matter delves into cycles of transition through the disciplines of textiles, ceramics, and jewelry. Here the material speaks through its own transformation, as objects are reworked and reinvented the matter changes in form yet the original meaning and memories remain. The participating artists work with living bodies of water, scoby, dust, blood, family heirlooms, discarded furniture, and garments. Dust becomes textile, blood becomes glaze, furniture becomes jewelry, and wardrobes and quilts are deconstructed. In some cases, transformation is not only a process behind the work, but becomes the work itself.

Material is used to work through understanding personal cycles of transformation. These works preserve and mend, giving a body to what remains unseen. Jewelry mends internal struggles, textiles create a non-existing place, and weaves give form to unarticulated feelings. Ceramic sculpture reflects on disappearing nature; tapestry woven around stoneware questions violence.
Feeling Matter asks how emotion can take physical form. While, at the same time,showcases an international group working in varying mediums we come together through our interest in questions of impermanence.

Thank you to everyone who came to my first solo exhibition(!!!!) To Whisper an Omen. I loved being able to play around with my pieces in the space. What a great way to create a dialogue between all that have emerged over the past few years 𓆇

To Whisper an Omen investigates how the body responds to its surroundings, tracing the dialogue between organs, senses, and the landscapes we inhabit. Through ceramics, the work captures impressions of soil, water, wind, and light, while incorporating sacred and medicinal plants that mark place and memory. Each piece reflects the cycles of life and death, showing how movement through geographic and botanical terrains leaves traces in both body and material. By engaging the senses and the tactile qualities of clay, the project observes how internal rhythms echo external forces, and how organs, tissues, and elemental surroundings interact. Whispering an omen becomes an act of attentiveness, of translating the rhythms of body, plant, and land into form, texture, and presence.

Guest teaching at IKKG – Institute for Ceramic and Glass Art in Höhr-Grenzhausen

Tontouristen collective was invited by Prof. Markus Karstieß for a three-week guest teaching in May 2024. As part of this, we collaborated with performance artist and researcher Dr. Nathalie S. Fari who contributed with her extensive experience to the program. She developed a one-week intensive workshop: BODY MAPPING LAB (27.05–02.06.24).

Nathalie guided the students through a week of sensory and embodied exploration. The starting point was the kiln yard of the institute, and the process culminated in a site-specific Body /Clay LAB at the European Ceramic Market in Höhr-Grenzhausen (01.–02.06.2024). Working in pairs, students developed interventions that linked movement, observation and clay through a three-part structure repeated across two days:

20 min mapping:
“Artists-as-archeologists” explored the market based on guiding questions: What forms of human/non-human agency are present? How is the space arranged – structure, atmosphere, flow? What narratives or material encounters arise?

20 min development of 10 min interventions:
Each group devised performative actions, gestures, movements, micro-performances. Always staged at the same location, a prominent staircase in the city.

20 min clay translation:
The embodied experience was then expressed through collective clay work at the IKKG booth, translating fleeting impressions into the tactile material form.

This process allowed students to connect with the environment through movement and touch – bringing together performative interventions and ceramic practice in public space.

Following the workshop, Nathalie wrote a reflective article ”Mapping: From Body, to Place, to Material, to Trace,” which will be published in an upcoming issue of The Teaching Artist Journal (TAJ).

Huge thanks to Nathalie, IKKG (Nora, Lena, Markus, Jens) and especially all the students for your presence, care, and curiosity! 🫶☀️

Nathalie guided the students through a week of sensory, somatic and performative exploration. Starting in the kiln yard, we then moved to the historic Kannofen, the last functioning salt-glaze kiln of its kind on the university grounds, a living archive of regional and ceramic tradition.

The students explored how the body can sense, respond to and reflect place through observing, documenting, mapping, and performing. Working in groups, they developed site-specific interventions that engaged with the embodied history of the space, using photography and video to trace their gestures and actions.
