Fitzroy Quarter by Milieu
(Coming Soon)

Fitzroy Quarter, a new design neighbourhood in Melbourne’s inner north, where Fitzroy, Collingwood, Clifton Hill and Fitzroy North meet.

We asked some of the people contributing to the project what they think makes a good neighbourhood…
Here, Mark Simpson from DesignOffice talks about how a good neighbourhood is comfortably walkable, somewhere that fosters spontaneity, engagement and connection in public life.

Room to discover. Our new Collingwood showroom, written up by @janhenderson_ for @indesignlive.

Thank you, Jan. You saw what we hoped people would feel walking in: calm, order, and space to find a piece on your own terms. It means a lot to have the room read so closely and so generously.

Thank you to Mark Simpson, Damien Mulvihill and the team at @_designoffice, who turned a plain white shell into a showroom of framed views and quiet sightlines. Deep eggplant, chocolate and mustard instead of timber, so the furniture carries the wood. A tokonoma for single pieces. A chair library beside the stair, so you meet each chair one at a time.

Thank you to @haydncattach for the photographs, and to @studiohenrywilson for the door handle you touch on the way in.

Level one comes next.

📍 Why does Brunswick look like Brunswick?

Brunswick is changing fast.
And that makes one question increasingly important:
How do you add density without removing the reason people wanted to live here in the first place?

The answer starts with understanding what gives Brunswick its identity.

It isn’t one architectural style. It’s a combination of fine-grain streets, industrial heritage, old terraces, independent retail, multicultural influence and a public life that happens very close to the street.
That creates a certain rhythm: smaller scale, more texture, more informality, more interaction.
At CUUB, we spend a lot of time studying not only what a building looks like, but how it belongs to its surroundings - what happens at street level, how materials respond to context, how people enter the scene, and which details make a place feel specific rather than generic.

Because you can create a beautiful image of almost any building. Creating one that could only be Brunswick is a different job.

Re-upholstered for their third life in Native wool textile, @cappelliniofficial Tate Chairs from @cultivated_au bring the space to life, while Classic wool textile + Zone vinyl feature throughout office + health club areas.

The light filled project is enhanced with textural layers of wools + repurposed furniture, a true celebration of local craftsmanship, sustainable + enduring design.

Date Night, just as we hoped. A beautiful way to begin.

An evening of thoughtful conversation, shared stories, generous pours of wine, plenty of laughter, and Oral Fixations by Long Prawn.

Together with Damien Mulvihill and Mark Simpson of DesignOffice, we came together to celebrate the launch of Chorus - but more importantly, to slow down, ask questions, listen, and connect over design with old friends and new faces.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the partners who made the evening possible: Union, Trutta Wine, Mateo, Long Prawn, Object Massive, M Pavilion, and, of course, Damien and Mark.

See you at Date Night - Edition 002, details to come shortly.

There’s a reason the Coco Pendant has quietly become an Australian design classic.

Coco Flip is a Naarm/Melbourne furniture and lighting studio founded in 2010 by Kate Stokes and Haslett Grounds. Fifteen years now of pieces shaped by Scandinavian and Japanese sensibilities, but made right here.

And that “made here” matters. Their production is small batch and local, with most pieces made to order. No warehouses of surplus stock, no offshore shortcuts. The Dancer collection is handcrafted from mid-fire clay with ceramicist Belinda Wiltshire in her Preston studio, minutes from their Northcote showroom. Design, maker and material, all within a few suburbs of each other.

This is what considered consumption looks like: fewer, better pieces with a traceable story, and local craft skills kept alive in the process.

Our favourites: the original Coco Pendant in hand-turned timber and spun aluminium, the sculptural Mayu series inspired by Iceland’s landscapes, and the Dancer wall lights.

Speaking of incredible design; Chorus, their collaboration with @_designoffice , has just launched. It began as a prototype for Melbourne Design Week 2025 and was refined over a year into a production piece in three materials. @belindawiltshire still hand-throws and glazes the ceramic version, and the brass and aluminium are sand-cast and finished by hand, so no two pieces are identical. It’s gorgeous. ✨

Visit them by appointment in Northcote, or explore more of their incredible work here @coco_flip 🤍
