An absolutely magic time was had celebrating @films_east ‘s latest achievement, Art/Film, an amazing collection of essays exploring the connection Film has across all other mediums of art. OBSCURAE was proud to have both our Editor in Chief @umniamusic and contributor @frankie.moonz included in the book, and to celebrate the release in London this past weekend. Film East hosted a panel as part of the @britishfilminstitute’s Reuben Library series, “New Writings”, then we headed upstairs for a lowkey Afterparty hosted by OBSCURAE, bringing together filmmakers and film writers for a relaxed night of networking as the sun set over the Thames. Our special thanks to Gifting partners @innerlather and @roughtradebooks, who contributed elevated fascinating material to our gifting bags for the entire UK Leg of the Promotional Tour of the book, that were adored by all who recieved them! You can order your copy of Art/Film at film-east.com/art-film.

I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am to returning to London this Spring to be on a panel with incredible women at the British Film Institute Reuben Library. Art/Film is on pre-sale now and will officially be released on May 11! Follow @films_east for more news on the book launch (I have a very fun chapter on the Blair Witch Project’s legacy of pioneering Alternate Reality Games for film marketing and the ways that ARGs blur the lines between the film/makers and their audiences- more on that soon!) Details of the BFI event below: Monday, 8 June, 18:30-20:00 London, UK The BFI Reuben Library will host Art/Film’s editor, Shelby Cooke, along with four female and non-binary critics, to discuss topics related to the book and the current state of the criticism industry. The conversation will ask questions such as how different art mediums appear on screen and the role they play in visual storytelling, how each panellist combines writing and artmaking, how accessible the industry is for women and non-binary individuals and more. Panellists include Umnia El-Neil (Art/Film essayist, Editor-in-Chief of Obscurae), Frankie Maranger (Art/Film essayist, Intimacy Coordinator), Orla Smith (filmmaker and Creative Nonfiction Film Weekend curator) and Haaniyah Awale Angus (film and cultural critic). Tickets will become available soon!

Still cannot believe this happened! 🥹 On Saturday, I had the pleasure of co-hosting my first ever panel (!) for the @britishfilminstitute Woman with a Movie Camera Summit with the wonderful @_haaniyah_ by my side and our lovely speakers @tenicanread and @amymaebaxter 🥳 We talked about romantic comedies, romance books, fanfiction (love you AO3), BookTok’s somewhat toxic relationship with smut, audio erotica and much more! Thank you so much to everyone who joined us that day! It was great to see such an engaged audience and it definitely helped calm nerves to see so many familiar faces in the crowd 🥹🫶🏼 Thank you so much to our speakers Teni and Amy for sharing their thoughts and insights (and book recommendations!) - it was an absolute delight to have them both on the panel ☺️ Special thanks to my wonderful co-host Haaniyah who has supported this idea from its inception and has been a dream to work with - from oomfs to co-hosts! 🫶🏼 Very special thanks to the BFI WWAMC team (Kim, Harriet, Saskia, Lilia and Judith) for their unwavering support and dedication to delivering such amazing and insightful events for the annual summit ❤️ Hopefully this is the first of many opportunities like this! 🤞🏼 P.S: if anyone wants to sponsor Haaniyah and I to start a podcast, we’re definitely open to offers x 📸/🎥 credits: @bridgeteke @ellamarke @shonaleo @blogbecca Edit credit: @elllenhutter #womanwithamoviecamera #britishfilminstitute #bfi
