ISSUE 3: M O S A I C has just dropped!

Like a mosaic, Qafiyah had to fall apart to come back together more beautiful than before. This is by far my favorite cover I have ever designed because I drew inspiration from the idea of community. A bunch of random homes and people who choose to exist as one. That’s what I want Qafiyah to be to the MENA/SWANA community.

Submissions to Issue 4 (name to be decided) will open soon but until then use the link in the bio to dive in to this wonderful collection of MENA/SWANA poetry, prose, and visual arts. Thank you so much contributors for your patience and support. Qafiyah couldn’t exist without you.

The paths i ran upon, wandered,
plucked flowers from sideways,
clicked pictures of the roman architectures,
drank coffee from small cottage cafes,

to the paths i wanna walk again,
so i can erase my regrets and tell them,
that gypsy, he looked good, while rugged,
and tell that old woman selling flowers,
keep a bouquet to herself, of her favourites,
lillies, poppy, daffodils and daisy,
to tell that girl who made me a Latte,
that sugar was always alright,
to tell that bus driver who greeted with smile,
his smile will always mean something,
to tired passengers, from factories,

on the same paths lies my fear,
the choices made wrong,
the options hard to pick from,
the bus stand that shared my tears,
the shoes that broke, filled with water,
destinations quite change,
but the paths remain same,
people tend to teach you nature,
lived, died, recalled, forgotten,
the paths i will never walk again.

"Üzülme.Allah bizimle beraberdir.
Don't be sad. God is with us.
Is your heart aching?
Is it aching a lot?
What if it was not aching at all?
It means there is someone touching your heart. It means you are not hopeless.
Don't be sad.

If your chest is slit from the pain and despair,
it means that your heart's land is clearing off the stones.
If your head is bent with your hands on it out of despair,
it means youlre in front of a big door of consolation.
Don’t be sad.

You can't pass through that door
without bowing your rebellious head.
If it's snowing on the mountains that you trust,
it's for the flowery plains of tomorrow.
Don’t be sad.

If you're ripping insides
like dropping leaves,
Its for spring to come.
Don't be sad.

He didn't give up on you, so don't give up on yourself.

It's okay for you to be sad. It's okay to cry, it's okay to let Him know that you were looking forward to something and it kind of made you heartbroken for a split second when you got the rejection. What not okay is to give up and become bitter, hopeless and annoyed at His decision.

Writer turned into food blogger? Nahh...
Just a light fun evening with family,
And what’s more comforting than a good conversation over a cup of tea? ❤️

With the ongoing situation around the world, constant stress and tension outside of home. Anxiety, depression at the rise. Covid doing it’s best to steal our mental peace. The least we could do is have a relaxing family time free of all the troubles outside .

One thing being at home gave us was to spend more time with family, we ought to make the most of it because life is unpredictable. We don’t know what lies in the next second.
Make memories,Have fun, enjoy whenever you get the time 💕

And Have a good cup of tea whenever you get the opportunity 😁😁 Because nothing can beat the comfort of tea ☕️

Just give him another chance, and he won't do it again. And that's how we slowly, unintentionally, erase the line of our limits. With every last chance we give, the limits set by us slowly fade, until a time comes when there's no limit to the abuse that comes our way. Abuse, not physical but emotional too.
Why do we blame women who stand up for their rights, why not men who gives them a reason to stand up.
This novel still is my favorite one. Because it taught me so many lessons.
-You are important, you have your self respect never ever forget that.
-You are a person, with rights and limitations, and there's no question of a second chance when someone crosses those limitations.
-Toxic relationships will rot you from the inside, know the signs and you can leave anytime.
-You can take care of yourself. Just a little struggle and you can, if you believe in yourself.
- And last one JUST KEEP SWIMMING. ♥️

I can write a long list, and I might one day but till then here's a few of them.

"Nostalgia"
.
The sound of the fans whirring after a long cold winter bring back the memories of my hometown summer days.
.
The familiar sound of crickets chirping in the middle of the day as I keep cuddling to the quilt till midday.
.
The gentle breeze the whizes past me during my lengthy walks back home in the sizzling summers reminds me of playful recess after the long school hours…
.
But nostalgia has more to it….the playful emotions, the lovable memories, they get displaced by feelings I never thought existed in me….
.
The rush of adrenaline as I get cat called down the street. The cheerful laughter of men as they sit down on the dinner table turn into evil manic laughs, the caressing hands become ruthless and dirty, the compliments into whispers and scorn, the lovable lullabies into never ending nightmares…. I get up with a jolt
.
Every time I feel this… Scared… feeling like a child I no longer am, waiting to be hugged…my esteem shattered, my inner all shaken.
.
But wait!! These aren’t my memories, this isn’t my past… why do I feel this way? Why is my head full of these memories? I am protected, I am safe, I am loved… yet I feel my cousin’s scars whose husband scalded her, I feel the friend who was raped as a kid, I feel my fellows who are harassed at work, I feel the things I was shhhed about. Every single hashtag becomes my own memory and comes rushing in to my head every now and then. For I too am one of them.” Hwwa ki beti”…
.
I am not so sure what to feel about this these feelings anymore. My pretty childhood memories are contaminated by filthy men…I put in a smile and join the crowd but will I be able to love again, to live again? As I keep thinking, standing within the world, I feel another rush of feelings, another round of memories, I turn back and hide myself, preparing to deal with this nostalgia.

Come, and hold my hand,
in between the green land,

Always losing bits of my heart,
To moments and magic,
But this time around,
I left my whole heart with you,
And brought back a tiny piece.

So I can keep returning,
Running back in your embrace,
Floating like the cotton clouds,
Dancing like the twinkling stars.

Come, and gaze into my heart,
And make the promise,
That we will never be apart.

Mirror Mirror,
On the wall
Make me look perfect
Hide my scars
Make me feel beautiful
Mask all my flaws.
Mirror Mirror
On the wall.
Say something,
You can say it all.
Then listen, it says
Beauty is not shallow,
It's in the depths,
you choose to ignore.
The imperfections,
That you are scared of
makes you YOU!
Own all your scars,
You earned it,
From the battles you fought.
You're beautiful with
All your imperfections.
And that's all you need to know.
