TCU, thank you for surrounding me with mentors, community, and amazing athletes. This has been a hard goodbye and cannot express the graditude I have for those who helped me become the coach I am today.

With that, I have accepted a position to be a full time S&C Coach at Boise State University (Beach VB & T&F)!

Thank. You. TEXAS! 💙

Words truly cannot describe how incredible the past 7-months of my life have been.

From receiving a call from @pedullaperformance last summer asking if I wanted to come to work for @zachdechant , to driving 27 hours to meet some of the most kind, hardworking, and unbelievable people I have ever met.

I’m emotional writing this for many reasons.

My goal with this internship wasn’t only to increase my knowledge of strength and conditioning, but to return the favor to Coach Dechant for all he has done for myself and countless of athletes, coaches, and friends/family.

Selfless is the epitome of what Zach Dechant entails.

From moving out of my apartment and taking a chance living somewhere across the country I’ve never been before, to creating long lasting memories and friends that I will cherish forever.

To every athlete, coach, and mentor I have met on this trip, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your patience, kindness, and resiliency throughout my time here.

My biggest takeaway from my time in Texas is that the Xs and Os of training will forever be available to everyone.

Reading textbooks, learning practical use of different training ideologies, and being a strength coach is truly the basics.

Strength and Conditioning is about developing Boys/Girls into Men/Women.

Strength and Conditioning is about building relationships, establishing TRUE culture and environment, and lastly it’s about growing not only as an athlete/coach, but as a human being.

Most people don’t want this job of a strength coach because of the monotonous schedule, the low pay, and the amount of time/dedication we put into our craft in improving our athletes performance.

But, let me tell you what makes it worthwhile.

Building relationships, watching your athletes develop both physically/mentally, and enjoying the ups/downs is what people get confused.

My goal has always been to help as many athletes obtain their goal and be a .01 percent of help in their athletic career.

My time is Texas hasn’t only solidified this ideology, but has planted a seed in me that will watered for the rest of my life.

The question posed was: “Is there a certain height at which inhibition begins to reduce peak landing force?”

As box height increases, so does incoming velocity. If an athlete can instantaneously yield to that force, they’ll produce a higher peak landing force. But if they can’t, they’ll spread the impulse over a longer time, reducing peak force in the process.

So the goal was to see if peak landing force increases linearly with box height.

My initial hypothesis was that neural inhibition causes the impulse to be spread over time when the athlete can’t tolerate the increased velocity from higher drop heights.

What I’ve observed so far is this:
There’s generally a linear increase in peak landing force until about 35 inches on average. After that, the peak landing force begins to plateau or drop off.

Interestingly, the greatest average increase in peak landing force occurred between the 12-inch and 18-inch boxes.

All participants were cued to land stiff and fast, but even with those cues, we saw limitations.

This raises a deeper question:

Is the inability to produce high peak landing forces purely neuromuscular inhibition governed by the CNS, or is it something more?

If neural inhibition were the only explanation, we’d be ignoring the contribution of bones, tendons, and other connective tissues that create structural stiffness. The CNS doesn’t work in isolation, it receives constant feedback from these tissues. So yes, the nervous system does consider physiological structures when modulating output.

But here’s the dilemma:
If the CNS always inhibited based on what the body could handle, injuries wouldn’t happen.
So clearly, the system can sometimes override inhibition, and that’s where failure or injury occurs.

It reminds me of something @killian.hamilton said on a podcast:

We can’t calculate what percentage of the amortization phase is neural versus structural

Must it be a blend between neural inhibition and physiological capacity?

I’m open to any thoughts, ideas, or interpretations.
