Our group sharing the struggles of the O’odham, Apache and Southern Arizona as a region with our Diné relatives in Shiprock, NM, this past Saturday 06/06/2026.

We want to thank our community of supporters as without your support we wouldn’t have been able to accept this invitation and build closer ties with our relatives in Northern Arizona.

This Spirit Strong event centered around addiction, its effects on individuals, on community and on how to find a way onto a good path once again!

Many inspirational stories of recovery were shared by some incredible and spiritually strong individuals!

Hózhó Protectors at the People Against Polluters Rally and March - 02/28/2026

Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine is located just seven miles south of the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine is also situated directly above the Redwall-Muav aquifer, a vital regional water source and the sole supply for the Havasupai Tribe.

Since 2016, the mine has flooded with over 70 million gallons of water containing elevated uranium and arsenic, posing significant contamination risks to groundwater and springs in the area.

After mining the Uranium is hauled across the Navajo Nation and the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation to the Energy Fuels Uranium Processing Mill located near Blanding, UT.

In 2022 & 2024, external reviews of workplace culture were conducted on a company-wide level at Rio Tinto. The 2024 Everyday Respect Progress Review found:

-8 people reported experiencing actual or attempted sexual assault or rape, compared to 5 people in 2022

-32 people reported experiencing pressure or requests for sex or sexual acts, compared to 37 people in the 2022 review. The majority of people in both cases were women

-7% of respondents (and 16% of women) reported experiencing sexual harassment (the same percentage as 2022 review)

-39% of respondents reported experiencing bullying (compared to 31% in the 2022 review)

-7% of respondents reported experiencing racism (the same number as the 2022 review

In response to these reviews, which were conducted following two separate class-action lawsuits brought against Rio Tinto alleging sexual misconduct and discriminatory hiring practices, Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said:

“I am proud and greatly encouraged by the genuine efforts across Rio Tinto to change and make Everyday Respect part of our daily conversations, and by the fact that this Progress Review shows the majority of our people believe we are heading in the right direction.”

I couldn’t be more proud of how our communities showed up to protect Oak Flat & the state of Arizona this past Wednesday.

We gathered outside in protest of a mining meeting being held here in Phoenix, which originally featured a presentation by Bryan Seppala of Resolution Copper. Once learning of our plans to rally, Resoluton pulled their speaker and backed out of the meeting (replaced by Les Presmyk, our AZ State Mining Inspector).

Why? Simple - because Resolution Copper is scared to face the communities they will impact.

Whether we came to this demonstration as rock climbers, tribal members, environmental activists, or simply concerned citizens, the message was one in the same: we must now, more than ever, unite and make our voices heard to put an end to the desecration & exploitation Resolution Copper will impose on the people of Arizona.

Along with Chi’chil Biłdagoteel (Oak Flat), you might see some of the signs in this post talking about places like Bougainville (Papua New Guinea), Juukan Gorge (Australia), Grasberg mine (Indonesia), Mandela mine (Madagascar), and Jadar mine (Serbia).

These are all locations where, just like Oak Flat here in Arizona, Rio Tinto & their partners are showing (or have shown) us examples of where their priorities and interests lie. Spoiler alert, if you couldn’t already guess: it’s not with the land they impact, and it’s not with the people who have to endure the mess they leave in their wake.

Among their impressive track record, you’ll find civil war, destruction of cultural heritage, disease, infertility, famine, lies upon lies, and devastatingly irresponsible consumption & contamination of water. This is not sensationalism - this is reality. This is what we stand against.

Do we really trust Rio Tinto (a British-Australian mining group whose largest shareholder is a state-ran Chinese company) to keep the promises they make to us, the citizens of Arizona?

This gathering will be the first of many. If you wish to stand with the people of Arizona, and stand in global solidarity with the people around the world who have fought (and are fighting) the same fight as us, then I urge you to come and take part. ✊

Latino is another colonial term to refer to Chicanos- and is used to erase the indigenous roots and ancestry of the VAST majority of remaining “Latinos” extant in the Americas.

But that point aside this is HILARIOUS. 😂
