The 2026 Urban Choir Festival is in the books! The VocalEssence Singers Of This Age were joined by more than fifty other singers from around the Twin Cities over two days of music making and a culminating performance last night at St Paul's Landmark Center. Composer and choral clinician B.E. Boykin brought her singular talents and leadership to the event, working with students throughout Monday and conducting the festival choir. SOTA's founder and artistic director G. Phillip Shoultz curated the 8th annual festival, which festured Boykin's music, and conducted a solo set at the top of the performance.

Thank you to the enthusiastic singers who made this year's festival such a memorable one!

🌙✨ WHAT AN UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT!!! 🎶🎹

What an incredible honor and privilege to be part of this year’s Denyce Graves Foundation Harvest Moon Gala as a pianist! I was especially delighted to accompany the extraordinarily gifted Danielle LaGrand, a phenomenal teenage rising star whose talent in both OPERA and JAZZ is simply remarkable!!! What a bright future she has ahead of her! 🌟

When I tell you that the WHO’S WHO of America’s classical music and opera worlds were in attendance, I mean EVERYBODY!!! What an extraordinary gathering of legendary artists, cultural leaders, philanthropists, and supporters of the arts!

The evening celebrated three remarkable honorees: Misty Copeland, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Ann Ziff! It was especially wonderful witnessing the incomparable Kenny Leon present the award to Misty Copeland!

We were also treated to a STUNNING performance by the phenomenal countertenor John Holiday and the extraordinary mezzo-soprano Susan Graham! Two remarkable artists whose artistry and musical excellence made an already spectacular evening even more unforgettable! 🎶👏🏽

AND WAIT!!! THE LEGENDARY PAUL SIMON WAS A SURPRISE SPECIAL GUEST!!! 🤯👏🏽 What a night!!!

It was also such a joy seeing the beautiful and immensely talented composer and fellow HBCU alumna, B.E. Boykin, a proud graduate of Spelman College! ❤️

My heart is filled with gratitude to the incomparable Denyce Graves and her foundation for the extraordinary work they are doing to preserve artistic legacies, celebrate excellence, and create opportunities for the next generation of artists.

This SOLD-OUT gala was so much more than a glamorous evening. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in young artists, preserving our musical heritage, and ensuring that the voices and stories of generations past, present, and future continue to be heard!

BRAVO to the Denyce Graves Foundation for a truly SPECTACULAR evening!!! 👏🏽🎶🌙✨

What a time this week seeing friends and meeting new colleagues as Grammy FYC season kicks off! I’m really loving the community and support happening in the NYC chapter. Sadly, I had to miss a couple of events, but really looking forward to checking out a lot of submissions!
And, made a stop in Philly to hear my friends shut it down for Philadelphia Orchestra opening night.

We are so excited to bring this special piece to life and perform Silver Rain at our Fall Concert on October 6, 2026! 🎶

#boykinstrong a total of 269 Boykin family members registered and celebrated our 50th Family Reunion with lunch and/or dinner (banquet). We are all from Mack Boykin (1870-1940) and Leola Phillips (1875-1943). We honored those who have gone before us and acknowledged ourselves at this time while celebrating the new members into the family. I was asked to read a scripture. That’s a pretty big deal for me because I wasn’t the public speaker or the performer during our reunions. We have a plethora so I enjoyed learning from them. I do not know Mack’s siblings yet. Nor do I know Leola’s siblings but I’m getting there…. lol.

What does making cocktails and squeezing citrus have to do with rehearsal?

A good metaphor or analogy can do wonders in rehearsal. Why? Unlike tactile instruments you can physically see, touch, and manipulate, the vocal tract and the coordination it requires can be hard to visualize. A good analogy or metaphor can help with this necessary visualization and coordination. That's what you see here in this clip.

What metaphors do you use in your rehearsals? What's been effective for you? Share in the comments below.
