Making documentaries is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I love it so much that I have no distinction between “life” and “work,” it’s simply a reason for being. I look at this picture @adamperez22 took of me in the thick of a shoot and it makes me so mad that I can’t have that camera on my shoulder right now, that I’m down for the count. But when I love my work it means I have no choice but to get back to it, even if the road is long 🙃

Here’s some BTS from a documentary @_kohar @adamperez22 @eberko @tiboac and I made for @aclu_nationwide about vicious and violent ICE raids that went down in Wilder, Idaho. The film was released today. It’s a reminder about how important it is to shed light on whenever government turns on its own people, we’ve seen these cycles before. Link in my bio 🐎

The summer months: Bodies of water feel like baptisms, Adam in the wheat fields of Idaho, Madison on the patio where the best bread is found, Lindsay with her handmade pennies, Michi and Andrew always lookin’ sexy. Zoe in Joshua Tree, even thinking about the midsummer heat in the high desert sends a flush to my cheeks. I long for visual decadence! Back at the LA Phil with my sister, the symphony always makes my whole body tingle. My first dodgers game! The incomparable Elida and sweet John along with Pee Wee’s biggest fan. Cheers to scallops and wearing corsets on a weekday because why the fuck not. Homemade family dinners, my heaven. Kohar and the horses in Idaho, too. Friends lookin’ like ghosts on L. Ron Hubbard Way. I stumbled across this broken tree in the woods back in my beloved New England and now I’m thinking about how the lushness of summer will soon fade into the sweet decay of autumn. A still life to round it out, there’s passionfruit every night in my tea. Look around! It’s not a bad place to be 🌍

One way we engage with artists at the ACLU is meeting them where they’re at. During awards season (aka the most wonderful time of the year), that often means the red carpet. I love the range of responses when people see the ACLU on the carpet, and you never know who your press mates will be. Last night had so many incredible answers to questions like:

1. If you could soundtrack this current moment in our country, with people taking to the streets protesting ICE, what song would you choose to inspire the movement? ➡️ aka speaking out in support of immigrants’s rights + freedom to protest

2. Why is it important for artists to use their voices and speak out against the offenses of this administration? ➡️ aka why artists need to care about the freedom of expression

3. Why does representation in film and TV matter? ➡️ the power of making stories highlighting marginalized communities

4. The closing question each time: Would you like an ICE OUT pin? ➡️ YES, YES, YES!!!!

I give these artists a lot of credit. The interviewer before me asked them about their favorite luxury goods and their favorite car. And then they come to me to talk about our crumbling democracy. Talk about WHIPLASH

Huge thanks to the publicists, too, who understand the value of their artists answering all of these questions, and to our incredible publicists at Origin who help to smooth that path for us in advance.

Next stop: Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday!
