We had a wonderful day last week at the eco gathering, joined by guest facilitator, Surge friend and transdisciplinary archeologist @_laraband, who lead us in making alternative nautical flags, symbols of hope and conviviality with all forms of life. This forms the first part of Lara’s involvement in the ‘Water Chronicles LIVE’ project artists and surgeons members @blancsceol are co-curating this year with @insola.berlin. The flags created will be travelling there in a couple of weeks…

We used a resistance technique with mud gathered from the Channelsea. Lara’s archeological approach and attention to care and material had us working with materials that would otherwise be discarded - flours that had been frequented by mice and were no longer edible, and cellulose from one of those plastic freezer bags that come with food deliveries. We mixed these in with the mud to form a thick paste for mark making and help the mud bond to the fabric. We consulted Lara’s treasured copy of ‘The International Code of Signals for the Use of All Nations’ (1902 edition) to spell out alternative messages for the flags.

Lara has been busy dyeing these with meadowsweet over the last few days, can’t wait to see there results!

We’re getting very excited to journey to Berlin for ‘Water Chronicles LIVE’, the first of two live programmes over the summer through the partnership we’ve been nurturing with @insola.berlin, both as artists and through our involvement with @surge_coop.

We’re very happy to be welcoming some of our favourite artists to make work especially for the Insola platform and it’s home, the Spree river. We asked the artists to create a gift for the Spree, to resonate through the platform and into Berlin’s watery networks, drawing on their own experiences of sound, installation, more-than-human collaboration and performance. We can’t wait to experience the works that have formed through this invitation… more info about that soon!

Come and join us!

What a wonderful day we had on Saturday - ‘rivering the future’ - the final session in our Spring workshop series ‘Leaky Instruments’ lead by Surge members artist duo @blancsceol and @coneffluents.

<*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*>

We returned to poetry and thinking about bringing our language to the river, speaking with the space not of it, and how to create a living breathing archive. @boggy_mire introduced a collective reading of Elizabeth-Jane Burnett’s ‘swims’, before collecting thoughts as we worked to contribute to a ‘riverbank’ of words. @blancsceol set up a live stream box to broadcast the soundscape of the Channelsea for @sound_camp’s ‘REVEIL’ and we interacted with the sounds, reading our poems to the river and listening in at the compost toilet. Al changed the filters over in the solar powered water pump system, discovering a leech which we returned to the river. Gregory and @phantom_sonix reinforced the tree fence and weeded around the trees, and participants made beautiful zines of the sites, sounds, smells and feelings of the day. We put some of the poetry up on and inside the toilet building and @sumptedious hung the test tube poems up like microbial bunting.

<*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*><*>

It was a beautiful way to round off the series and we’ll continue working with the materials generated in other ways….

We’re still feeling energised by the first of the ‘Leaky instruments’ workshop series last Saturday in collaboration with @coneffluents and @blancsceol.
The sunshine had us all growing towards the light as Jac - @sumptedious - and Katy - @boggy_mire - lead us on a poetic journey into the microbial world of the Channelsea. We tuned in to the sites, sounds and smells of the space, dipped our pippettes in the mud and water and wrote ‘test tube’ poems, thoughts and reflections about bacteria, cultures, gloop, balsam, contamination and much more! Thanks to all who came along - it was a real joy to be with you all questioning, listening, sounding, and playing with the weird broths and poems and tools, a beautiful day of coming together, learning and sharing in the welcome spring warmth, relating to the riverscape in new and interesting ways… can’t wait for the April session ‘Sounding the river’ lead by Surge members @stephen_shiell & @hannah_mary_white - artist duo @blancsceol.
Link to sign up in the bio 💙
Thanks for @officialqmul for the support for this workshop series.
At the beginning of the reel Jac reads a section from Lorine Niedecker’s poem ‘My Life By Water’ and Katy reads from Alexis Pauline Gumbs’ ‘M Archive: After the End of the World’ 🙏🏻🫶
