YUP, WE STILL REALLY, REALLY LOVE THE SURF. 😮‍💨🏁🌊

Shaking the dust off the skull caps. Digging toes into the sandy start line. Launching at the sound of the whistle. Charging into the water as fast as humanly possible.

Oooh, it was TOO GOOD to be back racing with our RSS Community!

Beyond the racing, it was epic to see the energy every club brought to the beach. Despite the chilly weather, the atmosphere was electric from start to finish.

Safe to say, this is going to be a season to remember. 💯⚡️

P.S. If you haven’t already, head over to our Facebook page and grab your photos from Saturday’s album. 🫡

SEALAND MOMENT OF THE DAY | SURF LIFESAVING COMP 1

THE YOUNG GUN MADE A STATEMENT

Last season, Samuel Mocke won every Open Oceanman he raced. On Saturday at Fish Hoek he lined up with 24 others, Open and U19 together on one start line.

One of them was Jarryd Cole. Still U17. Two seasons ago he won the U15 Oceanman at the Western Cape Championships, and last season he was winning U17 Oceanman races. This time he was racing the Open.

Out of the swim, a solid front pack had formed. The commentators assuming the usual Open suspects would be upfront. Heading into the first can of the board leg, Jarryd made his move. He broke away, up on to his knees, building the gap one stroke at a time.

Then came the ski leg, with last season’s champion behind him and the whole race asking one question: would the gap hold?

It held. Jarryd Cole wins the Open Oceanman at Surf Competition 1, with Samuel second and Matthew Brading third.

Welcome to the Open Oceanman, Jarryd. What a way to start a season.

ATT: OPEN MEN SURF MVPS.🔥

Two seasons of the Rescue Sport Series, four surf comps a season. So who kept turning up on the podium?

We went back through every Open Men’s result from SZN 1 and SZN 2 and counted individual podiums. Nine athletes recorded five or more.

Cody Stallard leads with 10, six of them in the ski. Troy McWilliam made nine swim podiums. Samuel Booysen made seven podiums and won all seven.

This isn’t just a points table. It’s a record of who delivered most often.

Who will continue to write their legacy as a real Open MVP this season?

👀 P.S. don’t forget to keep an eye out for our Next-Gen MVPs. We’ve got some strong youngsters looking to shake things up in the Open this season.

RESCUE STORIES | FISH HOEK SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

When a real rescue happens, every second matters.

Holly Smith and Matthew Brading take us through a rescue involving Fish Hoek lifeguards, breaking down what happened, the actions taken and what it took to bring the patient safely to shore.

They also talk about the training they do to compete in the Rescue Sport Series, and how developing these skills through sport can help prepare lifeguards for real rescues.

And this is the connection at the heart of Rescue Sport Series:

The skills used to save lives in real rescues are the same skills lifeguards train, practise and race in rescue sport.

Every swim. Every paddle. Every board race. Every run. Every transition.

Because when the moment comes, there is no starting gun.
No second chance.
No room for hesitation.

You train for the race.
You race for the rescue.
You rescue to save a life.

YOU HAD TO BE THERE.

Has a board heat ever been more hectic?

Western Cape Lifesaving Championships 2026.
Clifton 4th Beach.

Coming into shore for the Open Men’s Board Final, shorebreak management was key.

Four smart ways to get to the beach:

4. Launch down a mid-size wave and hold the straps.
AKA: Cody Stallard of Fish Hoek

3. Ride all the way through the foam onto the sand.
AKA: Jasper Mocke of Fish Hoek

Black and White Series | Halden Krog 📸

If you’ve been on the pool deck at a Rescue Sport Series event this season, you’ve probably seen Halden Krog behind the lens.

An award-winning Cape Town photographer with more than 25 years of experience covering news, politics and sport, Halden joined the Rescue Sport Series in Season 2 and has become a valued part of our community. His ability to anticipate moments before they happen has produced some of the most memorable images from the season.

For our Black & White series, Halden handpicked his favourite Pool Rescue photographs from the season. Without the distraction of colour, every frame highlights the details that make Pool Rescue such a compelling and technically demanding sport.

A huge thank you to Halden for sharing his time, talent and passion for growing our sport.
