We are in Tunis for the 8th edition of the Jaou Tunis Biennale (@jaoutunis), which is open across the Tunisian capital until 22 November 2026.

Founded in 2013 by the @kamel_lazaar_foundation, Jaou Tunis focuses on lens-based work from the Global South and its diaspora. This edition is built around the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement, Becoming the Ocean (BIM’26), produced by the @centredartcontemporaingeneve with the Kamel Lazaar Foundation and presented at Quechlet El Attarine in the Medina of Tunis, the first time the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement has taken place outside Switzerland.

Swipe for our day one highlights.

Unstrung, 2026, by @carbonbasedfunk, a single-channel video installation shot on 16 mm that looks at the Sudan war through song, dance, music and poetry, using military and war archives to show how the energy and climate around revolution has been appropriated.

In a Muscle Mood, 2026, by @krazykosmickid brings the Manguni Body Building Club of 1950s Jakarta together with Sartana, a Minahasan street network formed by former soldiers and migrants in the early 1970s, following an encounter in a restaurant between a Minahasan deserter and a member of the Menteng elite to explore how trauma, power, intimacy and vulnerability are carried across generations.

Mbwiti by Hildegard Titus, also a single-channel video installation about being an Aawambo person whose family has lost touch with its ancestral homeland in northern Namibia through migration, and what it means to return and look for roots that cannot be recovered in the same form.

Powerless (Prelude), 2026, by @_melancholia, a rear projection video installation about a child making art and arguing with her absent mother in a disordered home, seen only through surveillance and body-worn cameras, as a helicopter circles overhead and the promise of rescue and the capacity for violence come from the same machine.

@p.nazarethedicoesltda shows The Wale Man, 2011 /2026, drawn from his personal archive and shown as part of CINEMA TROPICAL’c a cinema-installation he conceives as a platform for several films.

[UPCOMING] Like a punch to the guts → Curated by Anya Harrison
Opening October 16th - 5 to 8p.m
Galerie Derouillon, Étienne Marcel

With the participation of: Désirée Nakouzi De Monte & Andrea Parenti of Collezione Nancy Delroi, Keunmin Lee, Shahryar Nashat, Steve Reinke, James Richards, Sibylle Ruppert, Diane Severin Nguyen.

A heavy thud. A sharp sting. A flash of bright light. The momentary blindness that surely follows. Delivered hard enough, a simple punch can fully shut down the body, arriving soon enough at a permanent final destination. If a deep, rippling shockwave is enough to disrupt the normal functioning of an organism, could the same be said of these works? The anxiety-riddled materiality of an image, with all its synthetic fleshiness interrupted by the occasional glitch, contaminates its surroundings. Provoking a radiating pain in bodies without borders, a haptic seeing that weighs down on the nervous system’s pressure points, it frees form and images from the constrictions and stranglehold of meaning. We should be so lucky.

Diane Severin Nguyen, 𝑊𝐴𝑅 𝑆𝑂𝑁𝐺𝑆 𝑑𝑢𝑒𝑡, @icavcu, Richmond, USA
18 September 2026 - 21 February 2027
Curated by Egbert Vongmalaithong

𝑊𝐴𝑅 𝑆𝑂𝑁𝐺𝑆 𝑑𝑢𝑒𝑡 is a kinetic and sonic installation that creates unlikely musical and cultural mash-ups and examines and the lasting effects pop media has on our collective subconscious. The exhibition remixes recordings of Cold War and Vietnam War–era protest anthems, pop songs, and Vietnamese folk songs, reimagining and distilling once-live performances on an abandoned stage set. The installation is an adaptation of Severin Nguyen’s performance piece 𝑊𝐴𝑅 𝑆𝑂𝑁𝐺𝑆, which was commissioned by the 2025 Performa Biennial.

Folks, that is a wrap for me on Performa––four years, two positions, and a bunch of art with some of my favorite people! I can’t tell you how much of a joy and a privilege it has been to work alongside artists to realize their most out-there ideas and dreams. I don’t quite know what’s next for me, so drop me a line for any of your curatorial or editorial needs. ✨🫶❤️‍🩹

context for @cfgny2’s 10th anniversary show last week. the show was an exploration of the impact the Sony portapak camcorder had on the development of video arts. My performance was a reference to Korean American artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s piece ‘Mouth to Mouth’ where she mouths the vowels of the Korean language, considering how lost language can underscore one’s sense of displacement. I was cast as the ‘male douche’ with the prompt to distort and almost sexualize the silent artist’s voice — something we are all too familiar with.

three amazing writers @whitneymallett Paul Chi for @vogue and @dionysus.in.modernity for @artforum explain much better than I how important this show was. And yes, QingYuan, so true, so very true.
