Just came out of the @_afrotellers_ Strategy Validation Meeting and honestly, I’m still sitting with a sense of awe.

The only word I can think of right now is: WOW!

For months, we’ve been working on this strategy - writing, rewriting, debating, editing, and refining. We got so deep into the process that somewhere along the way, I think we stopped seeing just how powerful this plan really is.

Presenting this plan to our ‘Village’ this morning allowed me to step back and see this plan as a whole for the first time.

Seeing it come together, hearing the conversations, and reflecting on the journey it has taken to get here made me realise the depth, clarity, and ambition of what we have created.

And wow, I’m excited.

I’m excited about what this strategy makes possible.

I’m excited about where it can take Afrotellers over the next few years.

Most of all, I’m excited because this is not one person’s vision but the collective wisdom, imagination, and commitment of a community that believes in the power of Afrikan stories.

To everyone who has contributed your time, talent, ideas, energy, and belief to this process, thank you. We would not be here without you.

Now we polish the rough edges, put the finishing touches in place, and get ready to launch this blueprint at the Afrotellers Conference 2026 in Mombasa.

What a journey. And it feels like we’re only just getting started.

On this day, 2 years ago, I launched my debut album MARIA WENYU. It still feels like yesterday. Maria Wenyu was my gift to the world — music created to inspire change. That impact was only possible because of you.

My gratitude to: God for the gift, @bridgenorth_music @farquharson_keith @rob.burrell for the platform and unwavering support, @jahprayzah for mentorship and advice, my band for their live + commitment, the press for amplifying the work, the sponsors @afharare @divineconcertsoundzw for supporting the vision and my family/friends who believed even when it didn’t make sense.

And to everyone still streaming Mari Wenyu across platforms — thank you for keeping this music alive.

Ndinotenda zvikuru. Maria Wenyu lives because of you.

📢 Last week, Afrotellers convened a strategy workshop in Johannesburg to chart its next phase of growth.

Conversations in the room signaled a clear shift toward a more structured, sustainable, and impactful movement, one that strengthens control, ownership, and value for African storytellers. The workshop created a collaborative space to align on this shared future, shaping how Afrotellers can deepen its impact and build resilient systems to support its growing network, while staying true to its core identity.

We are grateful to all delegates for showing up with honesty, openness, and a willingness to shape the future of Afrotellers.

The tone for the strategy workshop currently happening in Johannesburg this week was set by reflections received from Afrotellers around their experiences interacting with the movement. These experiences also provided strategic imperatives for Afrotellers as listed below.

💡Experiences

• Builds meaningful relationships across borders and beyond digital interaction

• Provides a diverse and inclusive storytelling platform

• Encourages ethical and authentic storytelling

• Functions as a collaborative, skills-driven network

• Inspires participation but is limited by structural and resource challenges

💡Expectations

✅️ A clearly defined identity of what an “Afroteller” is and who is included

✅️ A structured and sustainable ecosystem (with funding models, hub management, and operational systems)

✅️ A strong ethical framework to guide authentic, community-led storytelling

✅️ A collaborative network with clear skills-sharing, documentation, and knowledge systems

✅️ A continental, transnational movement with stronger partnerships, visibility, and impact

We welcome further inputs and reflections to help shape the future of Afrotellers. Free your thoughts and let us build a strategy that will lead to further development of a movement we are all proud of😁.

Last week Thursday, we hosted our 27th show at @friendshipbenchhub and partnered with the U.S. Embassy and Word Kalcha to present Black History Month: A Night of Spoken Word. It was a potpourri of creative expressions, from a DJ set to book readings, spoken word poetry, hip hop, and acoustic music acts. The performances were juxtaposed with a photo exhibition featuring icons like Mary Jackson, Martin Luther King and Louis Armstrong, among others. We also had a book table display of works by Zimbabwean and American authors.
