Preparing for Wind Dreams at Fossil Beach with Nancy Lupo @nancy_lupa and The Opening @theopeningplayactions. Over the next two weeks, 12 fifth graders from Richmond’s Reid Elementary will travel to Fossil Beach at Westmoreland State Park for several days of open-ended play, filmmaking, and fossil hunting. While there, they will encounter a set of metal detectors and may use them to uncover a series of mysterious words and objects. Following the trips, students will revisit the video they recorded and begin reflecting on their experiences. They will first gather for a conversation with artist Nancy Lupo. On a separate day, they will meet with scientists and educators from the Science Museum of Virginia @sciencemuseumofvirginia and the Virginia Museum of Natural History @virginiamuseum to use their experience to consider the site from a deep-time perspective. The Department of Fine Arts is pleased to announce an upcoming visiting artist lecture with artist Nancy Lupo! 🗓️ October 12th, 2026 ⏰ 12:30 PM 📍 Grace Street Theater (934 W. Grace St.) Nancy Lupo is an artist currently based in Berlin. Her sculptures engage with material culture and language, exploring how collective fantasies and emotions become embedded in form. She tests ambiguity and confusion as conditions that are both unsettling and full of potential. Lupo holds degrees from The Cooper Union and Yale University. Since 2024, she has been a professor at Kunsthochschule Mainz. Nancy Lupo’s Paraselene at Spazio Veda in Milan is one of my favorite shows of this year. Paraselene: an atmospheric illusion of a quadruple moon. In the press release, Lupo traces a decades-long thread of people telling her that her work lacks meaning, including the late Alan Longino. She presents a press release he wrote for a different show in 2019 and never sent until years later as the preface for her own press release. In it he reflects on how her work resists meaning, treating it as a gift. She lets it stand unresolved. It made me think about how meaning-seeking can sometimes detract from art’s power. The show itself provoked something closer to awe than understanding, just pure wonder.

What is left once projections turn into possession? In her current exhibition at Spike Island, 'Several Chickens Later', Nancy Lupo prolongs the reverie and the longing for domesticity explored in her newly-published text 'Meow Meow Real Estate'. The exhibition refuses a reality-check, and loops back into wistful illusion. Although the mirage is tired, its feeble flame still somehow persists. Playing with the scale and industrial grandeur of Spike Island’s galleries, Lupo's newly commissioned works evoke the fragility of our endeavours, and the futility of our fantasies.
