The third and last Exercise is a Public Activation where students gather their findings to share with the Harlem community via an installation / activity / event. This activiation is both informative and interactive, building upon the student’s knowledge of their anchor point topic by taking into consideration the feedback from the community.

Our installation explores the multi-faceted history and story of the Abyssinian Baptist Church and the Rennie (former Harlem Renaissance Ballroom and Casino). Our initial analytical projects on these topics provided us with a vast well of knowledge that range from positive, neutral, to negative outlooks on these buildings and organizations. Thus, to share the information with the public, we designed our initiation to be interactive yet digestible to maximize engagement with the content. We designed a series of boxes, each of them containing a puzzle exploring a different topic pertaining to either the Rennie or Abyssinian Baptist Church. As the guests complete the puzzle, they are encouraged to read the information on the box to learn more about the topic. Once the piece is completed, the guest can find the larger wood piece that corresponds with the puzzle they just solved. They can then slot that wooden piece into the wall, completing a small portion of the installation. Ultimately, once the installation is complete, you will see a vast overview of the intricacies behind the Abyssinian Baptist Church and the Rennie.
