POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Introducing our second Sandwell Stories podcast by Amy and the Campbell family. @amyrozelcampbell @the_parakeet_

Hi everyone, I’m Amy! The ‘Growing Up Green’ podcast documents the journey of our family as we strive to embrace eco-friendliness in our daily lives. The show is co-hosted by my 9-year-old Theo and we are from Bearwood. The episode delves into various forms of climate action as a family, such as growing our own veg, recycling, reusing, swapping and repairing, fostering a connection with nature, raising chickens and worms, and even protesting against climate destruction!

You can listen directly to Amy’s podcast by clicking the link in our bio.

Thanks to our funders @Sandwellcouncil @aceagrams for supporting this project.

In late summer I was fortunate enough to be chosen as part of the @the_parakeet_ #flowfestival artist bursary cohort. I spent time in my workshop developing a loose parts kit using only natural and recycled materials. I developed and adapted the kit in response to how it was used at different nature play workshops in late summer and early autumn in the run up to the #weforestfolk festival. Some of the observations I made about the kit are as follows:

- Allowing children to have completely free open play with the materials is very beneficial, but some children need more time than others with the resources before feel confident to help themselves to build and create.

- Using 'invitations to play' set ups with the resources can work if not too 'adult led', keeping it simple and not too prescriptive. I avoid over complicated themes which might hold significance for grown ups but usually doesn't for children, they can be alienating. Best to let the materials, textures, shapes and tools speak for themselves, let them become an infinite amount of objects with individual meaning and purpose.

- I've underpinned this making and testing period with written research on the following subjects:

The key characteristics of Play and it's role in Forest Schools
What is Play?
UN convention on the Right to Play
Playwork Principles
How I can support different types of play (using Bob Hughes 16 types of play model)
How play and choice is integrated into my practice
How this relates to recognised theories of children's learning and development.

From this, I have written a Play Policy for our organisation.

*Seeking a writer/vlogger*

As we roll back into the studio to start work on our new show, Woods for the Trees, we carry forward learning from this important report we commissioned from writer Bella Todd just before the pandemic began (link in bio). We are now looking for a writer/vlogger to visit our process, watch our show, and share their reflections on our work publicly. We're eager for this work to be accessible and useful to others and open to working with people from different disciplines. Some would call this an Embedded Critic. We've got a couple of days of fee to offer, so this is more a dipping our toes in the water than a full embedding.

Due to the short duration of this contract, we don't want to ask people to jump through the hoops of a full recruitment process, though we do want to be fair and open. If you're interested, please get in touch and we'll arrange a chat. We'll be choosing who to work with based on the relevance and enthusiasm of their approach. Please get in touch ASAP as we'd love to have somebody on board by 14 November.

[Alt text: the title 'Improving critical engagement with theatre made by people with learning disabilities' is written in black on a grey blue background. The left side of the image has a golden semi-circle, some smaller watercolour spheres in purple, rose and teal, and some black squiggles.]

THANK YOU so much to everyone who came and helped out with our last swap - we've only just recovered!

We ended with;

💥5 huge bags of kiddy clothes and accessories for local charities
💥5 bags of beautiful baby clothes for Karis Baby bank
💥350 swapped items!

That's 350 potential purchases saved, which is absolutely amazing. 💪

Thanks to @the_parakeet_ for all their help, and the team at Growing Up Green too.

When would you like the next swap?
