Bottega Banana - Day One, Behind the Scenes

The morning began in stillness. Tables laid one by one, banana leaves unfurled with care. Jasmine threaded through the air, Banana leaves with Jasmine strands adorning the space, their scent both grounding and celebratory.

The window came alive with vazhaipoo, our window art- banana flower painted into being by the hand of Sarah Braemer. A reminder that nature, too, is art.

Inside, the kitchen stirred quietly. Bisi bele bath simmered, fragrant with tamarind and lentils, while paruppu saadam waited to carry the comfort of home onto every plate.

Our resident poet set up his typewriter in the garden, preparing to turn the pause between bites into stories - touch into text, memory into words.

And in the center of it all, ‘Antaral,’ our current art work showcase by @peelstudio- woven from banana fibre and reclaimed dyes, took its place - a meditation on time, on pauses, on the spaces between.

By the time the doors opened, everything was ready: table, art, food, flowers. A stage set not for performance, but for presence

Feeling super happy (and honestly, a bit emotional) seeing designers from our creative community showcase their stunning work at @l_d_f_official! 🌟 From first chats and material hunts in our material hubs, to seeing the final projects up in lights - it’s pure magic. It never stops inspiring us how creativity can spark real change, idea by idea, hands by hands🙌

In March, #DazedClub announced a new opportunity for artists to participate in our first artist residency programme in partnership with @masonfifth – a space designed for artists and makers to come together, work, and share ideas. ⁠

After reviewing over 800 incredible submissions from Dazed Clubbers all over the globe, here you can meet our 8 winning artists, who'll be moving into Mason & Fifth, Westbourne Park for the next 2 months!⁠

During the residency, the artists will have studios at @workfrommeadow – Mason & Fifth’s creative workspace, where they’ll get to develop their practices, collaborate, and work towards a final group exhibition hosted by Dazed at Mason & Fifth on 14 August. At the end, they’ll be donating one artwork to live on in the building.⁠

🌿 When art walked in…

A few weeks ago, on a quiet Friday night, textile artist Yahvi @_peelstudio wandered into our restaurant. Curious, open-hearted, and full of stories about waste, weaving, and where beauty can be found.

Now, we’re honoured to be hosting her installation as part of this year’s @deptfordx — an exhibition crafted using scraps from our own kitchen: lemon peels, onion skins, corks and all.

It’s a celebration of slowness, circularity and shared space — and a reminder that what’s often overlooked can still carry so much meaning.

Yahvi’s work is on show from 12–17 July.

Talking Textiles hosts six Green Grads whose work focuses on sustainability in textile design, from utilising waste materials to sourcing natural dyes. Alongside the @rcatextiles showcase at RCA Battersea, running from July 12th to 14th, 2024, “Interrogating the Unseen Workshop & Performance” features a series of participatory activities and live performances in the workshop space. Held by our cohorts, these events aim to further engage you with our practices through the actions of making and interacting with textiles. Places are on a first-come, first-served basis. Transforming Waste into Innovation: Turning Discards into Valuable Resources ♻️

RCA student @yahvi98 demonstrated that waste can be useful too by collaborating with RCAKitchen. Through this partnership, Yahvi took commonly discarded items such as eggshells, pits, and banana peels and ingeniously transformed them into innovative biomaterials. This project showcases the potential of reimagining waste as valuable resources, aligning with RCA’s commitment to sustainability and creative problem-solving
