While the world is locked in watching the Round of 32 unfold at the FIFA World Cup, @_philwall is helping us understand the deeper story behind the game in "Soccer Meets America". ⚽🎥

But as Phil shares in this clip, soccer’s story in America did not start with the World Cup.

It did not even start in 1994. It has been here.

Union soldiers played it during the Civil War. Crowds of 46,000 showed up for soccer in New York in the 1920s.

And that is what makes sports stories so powerful.

The best ones are never just about the game.

They reveal culture. They say something about who we are, what we value, and how sports continue to shape people, communities, and generations.

That is at the heart of Phil’s new Roku docuseries. It brings those stories forward and challenges us to look more closely at the history, culture, and passion behind the game.

Great storytelling starts with the audience. Not the teller.

@_philwall knows that.

He is an award-winning filmmaker and storyteller whose work has taken him from deeply personal projects like "The Book Keepers" to his new three-part Roku docuseries, "Soccer Meets America".

There is a reason I always enjoy sitting down with Phil. He has a way of getting underneath the surface of a story and helping you see the people, the purpose, and the responsibility behind it.

He shares a simple but powerful lesson he heard from a client:

You can walk into the room and say, “Here I am.”

Or you can walk in and say, “There you are.”

That applies to film.
It applies to coaching.

Because if you want people to connect with your message, you have to understand who is in front of you first.

The story is not about proving what you know.

It is about creating connection, meaning, and belief with the people you are trying to serve.

The best sports stories are never just about the sport.

They reveal culture. They reveal belief. They reveal what people have been building long before the rest of the world started paying attention.

That perspective comes to life in this conversation with @_philwall , who returns to The Athletics of Business Podcast to talk about his new three-part Roku docuseries, "Soccer Meets America".

And with the #FIFAWorldCup happening right now, the timing could not be better.

Because soccer’s story in America is much deeper than many of us realize.

Union soldiers played it during the Civil War. Massive crowds showed up for games in New York in the 1920s. Pelé brought global attention to the New York Cosmos.

But Phil’s work does much more than uncover history. It challenges the narrative.

For too long, the conversation has been centered around whether soccer is popular enough in America. Phil pushes us to start from a different place: the game is already here, the audience is already here, and the real question is what comes next.

That lesson applies far beyond soccer.

Leaders do this all the time. We get stuck trying to validate something that already has a solid foundation, instead of asking better questions about vision, growth, standards, and what success really looks like.

That same leadership lesson showed up in the way Phil had to bring this project to life.

After years of carrying so much of the creative process himself, Soccer Meets America required him to trust a larger team, ask better questions, admit what he did not know, and stay connected to the vision without trying to control every detail.

That is leadership.

This conversation is about soccer, but more than that, it is about culture, leadership, humility, and the responsibility we have in the stories we choose to tell.

Full-circle moment: I served as music supervisor on #SoccerMeetsAmerica, a three-part docuseries exploring the history of soccer in the United States, produced by @byvoxcreative & directed by @_philwall, now streaming on @therokuchannel. I played soccer growing up & attended the 1994 World Cup. Working on this project reignited my passion & let me blend it with my love of music. Thrilled to have @smashingpumpkins, @flaminglips, @buttholesurfers, @charlesbradley, @pokeylafarge, @chicomann, @smallblackmusic, Mountaineers, & Hidden Fees on the soundtrack, & to get to collaborate with my friend & fellow music supervisor @caze4daze again! I spent most of the last year producing a documentary series exploring the history of soccer in America as someone who knew almost nothing about the sport. I traveled the country meeting members of this very passionate community and got to make this show with some very talented artists and storytellers. Soccer Meets America is now streaming on Roku so go watch it and give us views please and thank you ⚽️✨🇺🇸

Why we do what we do...said far more eloquently by Jeff Tweedy in his book "How to Write One Song" (which is fantastic, btw...esp the audio version).

The chance to make a thing that lands with someone in a way that enriches their life, even just a little bit. That lifts instead of weigh down. That brings a glimpse of connectedness...stories can do that.

And especially in our dopamine-fueled cotton candy-demanding media economy, but that's for another day.

Happy Friday, everyone ✌

Clients get the polished final cut—for good reason. If they saw the actual process (endless timeline tweaks, 3am “what if we just...” texts, and the 48th version of the same 17-min. episode), they’d probably question our life choices.

Credit to the team that made it look effortless:

Phil Wall - producing, editing and narrating(!)

Dena Kopolovich - designing our unique “video podcast” visual solutions

Dan Aronowitz and Graham Giovanetti - schooling us on the finer points of basketball and movement

Gary O’Keefe - making the final mix crisp

Syd Gladu - providing essential second eyes and ears

Sarah Hack - keeping us up late and on time

“The Get” might be basketball’s most quietly devastating play—and, unsurprisingly, Steph Curry has perfected it.

We partnered with Virtual Repetitions (pioneers in app and VR powered basketball training) to examine this move that appears to defy basketball logic.

Documentarian Phil Wall breaks down:

-The historical evolution from the give-and-go
-The physics behind its effectiveness
-Why it is relevant and virtually unguardable in the NBA today

Catch his full analysis in the premiere episode of “Steal This Play.” Essential viewing for coaches, players, and basketball strategists.

MOSH Audio partnered with NBA Launchpad company Virtual Repetitions—the tech pioneer of app & VR training—to make a show that breaks down basketball’s legendary plays.

Documentarian Phil Wall and multimedia artist Dena Kopolovich cracked the code on visual accompaniment for audio-first storytelling.

This isn’t another talking-heads sports pod. Learn secrets of the game through physics, history, and nuances of the modern NBA.

Sights & Sounds | Hop Farming

Last fall, I got to tag along for the first stint of production for Director @_philwall’s documentary “Crafting Culture.” We captured an intimate peek into the complexities and realities of growing hops, but the stories of multigenerational dedication and resilience stick with me. What a beautiful place Yakima is.

Camera work by myself & @big_birchfield.
