I think the job description of a photographer changed radically about ten years ago. In fact, I’d say the same thing happened to most artists.

At one time, an artist mostly needed to be good at their craft. A photographer made photographs. A musician made music. A writer wrote. But somewhere around the arrival of the smartphone, a whole new workload was handed to artists.

Now it helps to understand photography, video, creative writing, visual communication, and whatever is happening on social media this week. It’s debatable whether all of that is really necessary, but I’ve watched people go very far not only because of their talent, but because of their ability to communicate that talent with a phone.

For me, it was a no-brainer. About fourteen years ago, I decided I needed to become better at writing and visual communication. So I took every writing and visual communication class I could fit into my schedule.

It didn’t make me rich or famous. But it did something much more practical: it gave me more ways to communicate what I was already trying to say through my art. And maybe that’s part of being an artist now. It’s not only about making the thing. It’s also about learning how to communicate why the thing matters.

2025 was pretty good. It’s already the first day of the new year and looking back on it there isn’t much I would change. Things were acceptable.
