what’s with all the confetti?

not in short: the older I get, the more I long to connect to my heritage. if you’ve known me in any capacity longer than probably a week, we’ve probably had a convo about the feeling of being lost on the way to “belonging.” what is it like to operate in this world/industry within the identities we’ve been told to carry or not carry.
I’ve been itching to make a piece about my roots. the lack of things passed on through generations for whatever reason or another. can i fill in the gaps with who i am now? am i allowed to? who tells me i cant? do the sly jokes and comments from people justify me sacrificing one half of myself for another? and all of this to appease…. who? would my ancestors be proud of me? or view me as the no sabo kid. so the opportunity of @novellasshowcase came up and i knew it was time to try.
we sat on the rehearsal floor for the first hour just talking. conversations continued through the week. conversations that I’ve needed and still need more of. the process became more important to me than the product… but that’s how I’ve been operating as of late. this piece and this experience has meant so much to me. Alzheimer’s can take memories away. colonialism. assimilation. benchmarks. simply the sands of time. but maybe with all of these things, we can still return to things that the body can never un-remember. and maybe they’re set free again in a new/old way? Idk yall, buy me a coffee and ill sit down and give you an in depth explanation of the piece if you want it hahahaaaaa BUT

This felt like the beginnings of a more accepting self. and equally as important: the beginnings of a community I’ve been too scared to reach out to.

So grateful to be a part of such a fun show and a fundraiser for a great cause! Thank you @danielpjgold and @kailinbrownn for trusting me with your choreography and putting me in this show (my first major stage show in NYC)! Can’t wait for the next show!

a love letter to @kiko.newyork

finding pictures to try and encapsulate my nearly 2 years at Kiko and there aren’t enough to capture every moment, memory, and experience.

when i joined the opening team at Kiko, i was in a very low time in my life. lost, coming out of a job that did not see my work, effort, nor my personhood. i was nervous to join a new team and restaurant; doubting myself, my worth and where i was headed. Lina and I instantly clicked and i felt safe to blossom.

Lina and Chef took me in, and not only gave me an opportunity to help shape their new business, but they helped shape me professionally. When I moved to NYC 8 years ago, freshly 22 and living on my own for the first time, I did not realize I was going to gain invaluable experience and respect for the hospitality industry.

From serving to growing into Management and Somming Kiko taught me so much. Lina and Chef Alex have been so influential in my life: inspiring me to reach my full potential. I’ve never had a boss, much less an owner, sit me down and say “You are talented, keep going”
Over the past decade, this industry continually embraces me with open arms, and if I hadn’t found Kiko, I wouldn’t have the confidence in my skills that I do.

Kiko has it all. Chefs food is top-notch and genuinely excellent. Lina’s eye for spirits and niche Sake/Wine is unparalleled. Listening to them share their story and ideas over the past 2 years has been such a privilege.
Not only that, but excellent people surround them. I’ve made some of the most genuine friendships of my life through Kiko. Working along side such excellent folks inspires you to be better too, and damn did I leave behind such a wonderful team. I am so grateful to have gotten to work with some of the most talented, kind people in the business. Hospitality workers are the misfits. The artists in between jobs, talented people who love food, beverage, and taking care of others

Leaving NYC after spending my entire 20’s there was difficult, but leaving this job, with these beautiful people was even harder

I’m not sure what my next chapter has in store, but I am so grateful for everyone that got me here. 💟 #86

If you're lucky, you'll have the realization that you were exactly where you belong (even if it was just for a little while.) We created something special and man did we have a great run! I love you guys 🌞
