One festival I genuinely love and feel so deeply involved in is the Ganeshotsav. A festival that takes so many different shapes across the world, and yet somehow always feels like home. I grew up in Pune, loving the way Ganpati takes over the city, but I’d always wondered what it looked like in Mumbai. This year, I finally got to experience the massive murtis, elaborate pandals, endless darshan queues, and the sheer scale of it all. What stayed with me most was seeing these celebrations woven into Lalbaug Parel, the beautiful chawls, old mill neighbourhoods and streets that have been part of the city’s Ganpati culture for generations. From the public celebrations popularised by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893 to the massive celebrations we see today, so much of Mumbai’s Ganpati is rooted in community, culture and simply coming together. We caught up with a film student from FTII and asked him about Indian film, art and culture. His answer came in Marathi. And somehow, that makes the conversation even more meaningful. During my school days, I had a study table at home, above that place, I used to write quotes. I had written one day, "Keep your eyes wide open while dreaming". The meaning was simple, I wanted to dream it until there was no difference between that and reality. The difference comes when we think about how long we can keep our eyes open to dream. Then I think that life is all about keeping the eyes open, wide enough, long enough and blinking once in a while to greet the other soul like cats do. Glad we all met and blinked at the same time. The diploma film at FTII, felt like a little war to me. I had not assisted in any diploma projects before and I was scared a bit with the feeling that it might become just another exercise and not a film. The day I met Mehar regarding diploma, I was sure that a person who is confident and clear about what she wants will lead a team for the film. The shoot of the film, changed me. I started to have more trust in people and be relaxed about what could happen. Because anything can happen anytime. Rashmi's Intelligence, Sai's Discipline, Bhopi's Witty Humour made the process of everything simple and fun. I cannot forget the fun we had in the pre production and shoot. If I ever could, I would go back in time just to crack more jokes while planning and have more fun on the shoot. Going to Cannes was truly surreal. I felt overwhelmed and so heartful to see that everybody present at the festival was rejoicing in the memories of the shooting the film and then celebrating cinema. I had packed a very light jacket because somebody said it was summer there. I can't forget the shivers and then the soft sun which gloomed till 9pm. Getting ready everyday to travel to the venue together and seeing Vin Diesel cry. It was all a shock and we were in disbelief for a few days until it suddenly hit like a pint of Guinness. But it was not possible without what FTII provided us. A space to be ourselves and to experiment and to connect people whom we might not have met. All the people who worked on this film were really good at heart and that really was a blessing. I want to go back to Cannes so much and to keep the eyes open. ❤ #cannesfilmfestival
