Third Cinema (named after the South American film movement) emerged from a chance proximity: Michal Sapir from @aforgashum rehearsing drums in a studio next door to where Alex Sesper from @acruzsesper was working on his visual pieces. They had crossed paths earlier, in 2021, during the Noise Agency residency. Starting something together felt immediate. Drums and bass became the raw core — early sketches shaped through repetition, texture, and instinct. A forced pause during the 2023 war interrupted the process. In 2024, they resumed with a new configuration, joined by Yam Ashkenazi from @we.amiga on vocals and synths, expanding the sound into denser, more atmospheric territories. This lineup moved quickly into live performances, capturing a raw live recording now available on digital platforms: spotify... and thirdcinema.bandcamp.com

@maadim_tapes is a cassette label established in Tel Aviv in the end of 2024 by a group of musicians and artists who have shared a studio complex at Shoken 6 for over a decade. Since moving to the city in 2020, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with them. During one of the first outings after the COVID lockdown, I purchased the book “Oh Mighty Gods” by @erannave , published by Dfus Golem from @urik_h_t , along with a cassette from the band Love Grenade at a table where they were selling materials at a record and publication fair. A few months later, in 2021, I participated in the first residency of the Noise Agency, curated by Guy Dubious and Or Rimmer. @or.river.12 who I connected quickly and who also shares a studio in the same space with @hagaizenberg , he was part of the residency that year. In the final weeks of my residency in April 2021, Hagai showed up one day, and we improvised together for the first time. Throughout 2022 and 2023, I began to rehearse, improvise, and play more frequently with Or and Hagai, I can say we became good friends, spending more time in the Shoken space, which also allowed me to meet @sharon_fadida and @asafsetty. Over the past year, I started producing in the space as well, and my friends have always encouraged me and support me a lot I can say. Being part of this new tape label project means a lot to me, especially since I believe in something meaningful and connected to this DIY spirit. I admire each of them as artists and individuals and really wish more people could engage with their art and ideas.

Bandcamp link on bio. https://alexsesper.bandcamp.com/album/soft-shell Alex Sesper sound performance for “Soft Shell” exhibition by Ayelet Ben Dor (b.1981, Israel) and Alexandre Cruz (Sesper) (b.1973, Brazil) at P8 Gallery (Tel Aviv), curated by Estee Balsam and Camea Smith, in January 2024. The appearance of a soft shell in nature also refers to the process of development and shape shifting. A soft shell is a temporary phenomenon marked in the lives of arthropods, beginning in the stage during which an outer harder shell is shed, until the time when a new long-lasting shell is regrown. In a juxtaposition of the current time and place, the term soft shell serves as a metaphor for a need or a given situation in the face of a new sound box that intensifies our aural and visual surroundings since October 7th. Their works are composed of layers upon layers of materials, adopted by the artists and assembled together delicately, creating a multi-faceted, kaleidoscopic microcosm. Cover art by Ayelet Ben Dor and Alexandre Cruz (Sesper) Audio performed by Alex Sesper; using tape loop cassettes, 2 tascam porta studios, and a Doepfer Dark Energy synth. Recorded live.

Last saturday at @p8gallery // gallery talk about DIY publications with Omer Sheizaf, Jackie Levi, Ayelet Ben Dor, Alex Sesper and the curators Camea Smith and Estee Balsam // Alex Sesper “Soft Shell” performance video and photos by @amitzcar “Soft Shell” has come to an end; it was quite an experience. I would like to thank Ayelet Ben Dor, Camea Smith, Estee Balsam, Lee Barbu, and all the artists from P8 Gallery, Omer Sheizaf, and Tatarbut Mehoga, Jackie Levi, Elad Larom, and everyone who helped in any way to make everything a reality or who visited and honored us during this period. When Estee and Camea visited our studio for the first time, one of the last words Camea said to us was that it would be a “healing” process, and indeed it was.

Work from Ayelet Ben Dor (2023). January 4th “Soft Shell” at @p8gallery Participating artists: Alexandre Cruz (Sesper) and Ayelet Ben Dor. Curators: Estee Balsam and Camea Smith. Soft Shell is a collaborative exhibition featuring joint and individual works by Alexandre Cruz (Sesper) (b.1973, Brazil) and Ayelet Ben Dor (b.1981, Israel). At the heart of their collaboration is a site-specific wall piece created especially for the exhibition, which constitutes their first mutual work, alongside selected new works by each artist. Their work - a synthesis of printed textures, photographs, screen prints, and drawings - formulates a unique visual language sourced from a dissolution of found memories that take form in the physical sensations of the materials being used. Drawing from transitions between the fantastic and the realistic, their works explore fragility and vulnerability through a sequence of visual encounters. The collaborative wall collage will be complemented by a new series of works on paper by Ben Dor, performing as a sort of relief, alongside a compilation of photo-collages by Sesper. Their works are composed of layers upon layers of materials, adopted by the artists and assembled together delicately, creating a multi-faceted, kaleidoscopic microcosm.
