Our hearts are so full. ❤️

This past weekend, I had the honor of celebrating my appointment as Whittier’s first Poet Laureate alongside so many friends, family members, fellow poets, and community members who have supported me and Poetry for the Masses throughout this journey.

The evening featured myself on the mic, alongside three incredible poets — @thee_amador @pamconcep5 @_theataylor — who shared their poetry and their beautiful stories with a full Burden of Proof. We shared delicious food and treats by @bakedwbri, drinks by @headlightbrewing and @drinkbecketts, and spent the evening doing what art does best: building community.

I want to give a huge thank you to @burdenofproofna for being our home and our space to gather and create art. Your support helped make the evening possible. And thank you to @deanpeterson_ for capturing the event so thoughtfully through these photographs and preserving so many wonderful moments from the night.

Serving as Poet Laureate is a responsibility I do not take lightly, and seeing so many people gathered to celebrate not just this milestone, but the arts and literary community as a whole, was incredibly meaningful. Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, read, listened, and helped make the evening so special.

This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to continue creating opportunities for poetry to flourish throughout our community. ✍🏼🤍 @pftm.workshop

it’s been a busy week since @cityofwhittier announced my appointment as Whittier’s first Poet Laureate and I’m so thankful to everyone for their love, support, and sweet messages 💌

there’s so much to come, but first I wanted to celebrate at my favorite spot, the place where @pftm.workshop truly evolved into its best form yet — @burdenofproofna. some of my favorite poets are performing alongside me, and there will be fun NA drinks & food. enjoy some poetry and good vibes with us!
