Behind the Blood

The procession has run through Bruges every Ascension Day since 1304. It is grand, and very much alive.
Behind the Blood doesn't photograph the grandeur. It photographs what exists alongside it. The dog unbothered in front of the Roman soldiers. The dignitary waving ceremoniously outside a chocolate shop. Jesus, mid-procession, having his wounds retouched.
These moments are funny. They are also completely real. And it is precisely that — the humour, the ordinariness, the humanity quietly coexisting with 700 years of tradition — that makes the procession more memorable.
