In all of these scenes, I was in excruciating pain. Pain so great that I had to warn people before they approached me, lest they brush up on me too hard. Pain that was radiating like a scorching meteor whizzing through space to destroy the prehistoric creatures living under my scapula. Seismic vibrations of agony that would penetrate my land of dreams and bring me urgent red-ribboned scrolls and coded messages in spasms before dawn. Lord knows. This was realms of pain I hadn’t felt since I was head butted on the soccer field and wine-red burst like a blooming rose across my white, polyester jersey - as I clutched at the remnants of my nose. When the trainer asked to examine it, my 16 year old self (you may have met her a few times even these days), replied, “No need for you to look. It’s fucking shattered. Just take me to the hospital now.” Despite of and within this pain, I tried to make it to all of the events that my friends were hosting. I would post up in one spot, laid out on the grass or concrete to see and be proud of those who collaborated in my raising. And in my fragility, my friends found me where I was. They held my hand, walked at turtle pace, blunts and meds to soothe the pain, stroked my head and brought me bites of food when the line was too long for me to stand. My mama strapped me in the trunk of the car so I could be horizontal while we drove. It didn’t take me long to understand the message that pain was driving into me from the inside out. It took me 8 days to move again. And it’s taken two months to be in my full yoganinjadancer strength and pick up what this pain was putting down. The gift of untenable pain was to be opened to receive CARE. To surrender into the embrace that I’m quick to give the other. To be taken care of in ways I was terrified of before. After all (chimes in 16 year old self, yet again) “It’s cool. I got this” But that “I’ve got this” doesn’t believe in the interdependence of community that it professes to build…that “I got this” is a fear of being truly vulnerable to an ecosystem of CARE. So, thanks for the care, bbs. & Thanks @marcusworldsoul for inspiring this series of sharing. ❤️

UPDATE: postponed to 9/26 due to the rain forecast ☔️ one final Cherry Bomb Day Party tomorrow (2-8pm in the alley next to @tracebrewing) and believe me when I say it was hard won. between everybody and they mama wanting an alley party and the insufferable Karen antics of certain Bloomfield residents I’ve already aired out…it’s been a struggle. but here we go. one more time. 🍒💣 I mentioned in my stories a couple weeks ago that while I was in LA I attended @theyhousela’s Sunday Sessions takeover in @grandpark_la and had a spiritual experience. I haven’t danced that hard at a party in years and it was all house music. that solidified a lingering thought I’d had for months—that I should narrow the focus of Cherry Bomb Day Party to house the same way I did for Cherry Bomb which became a techno party when it returned to @spiritpgh as a monthly residency in February. thank you, @terrell_.brooke ❤️‍🔥 I feel good about this remix of the Cherry Bomb brand—house in the sun and techno into demon hours. I got some very fab deejays joining me that are gon go BEAST MODE: my werk husband @rojowashere, my lil sis @manibahia_, and the talented @khankuma140 who is joining a MoB lineup for the first time. he’s not queer but his moms are so that’s extended fam. 🏳️‍🌈 I hope everyone comes ready to dance and feel some communal togetherness and joy. I also hope it doesn’t rain or at least not much. if it does we’ll have to postpone. I’ma hope the universe sees me fit for a blessing so we can just have this 6 hour mental health break. it’s needed. here’s to brighter days 🙏🏾 📸 @coledupo

UPDATE: Postponed to 9/26! ☔️ This Saturday is our final block party of the season and the soundtrack is all HOUSE MUSIC everything. This is your invite, dancers, dadas, baddies, and butch queens, to shimmy under the sun at Cherry Bomb Day Party. 🍒💣 Get into these moments from the last one during Pittsburgh Pride Weekend. There was *so* much Black queer joy and love from our allies. It was truly special…this city at its best 🙏🏾 HUNY XO, Khan Kuma, Mani Bahia, & ROJO. 2-8pm in the Clement Way Graffiti Alley next to Trace Brewing (4312 Main St). Off the Press Burgers is pullin up and the drinks will be available for purchase inside of Trace and Liberty Beer (slushies!). A perfect day is on deck and it’s free to attend. See you soon! cc: @hunyrocks @khankuma140 @manibahia_ @rojowashere @tracebrewing @offthepressburgerspgh 📸 @coledupo

BTS 🌿 🐉 🌊 ••• preparing offerings and performance for @siestafiesta_ •••••••••• Leading up to the show mi found myself questioning mi worth as an artist. Which is funny because the intention of mi dance was to serve as a reminder that We Are Enough As We Are🌱We Are Worthy As We Are🌱A reminder to Just Be, to slow down and remember the Heart, the Breath, the Soul, to remember that we are not alone we are always connected to each other in this human experience, we are like the trees, and we are always connected to our ancestars and all that is- a reminder that we are here, a moment of gratitude, a moment of offering. So there i was questioning my own worth while simultaneously trying to embody mi natural worth. Challenged by mi own growth led mi to breathe deeper into myself, to be still, to be reminded that Spirit is always within us never without, to be guided by ancestars, to allow myself to just Be; to be playful, to be true, to be real, to be a ritual of Love and generosity AND to let go of fear! Thank you Spirit for always being. This dance is inspired by Filipino folk dance Pandanggo Sa Ilaw (originally taught to mi by PAPAGP and my duet partner @_krimpii_ ) reimagined. This was mi first time creating an entire dance with story telling and choreography on mi own. To share this with mi teachers has been a wonderful honor. mi grateful for the shared space and being received with such sweet Love🌱 keep dancing Spirit #ancestral #evolution #artisticexpression #fiesta Sounds by @thesundropgarden and Gabi sa Unay House of Gongs @houseofgongs
