📚 buddy read review: the nightingale by kristin hannah

got to buddy read this one with @_whatmoreads and listen, this was a proper tearjerker. it's a historical fiction, set in WWII, two sisters surviving in occupied france, faced wuth one impossible choice after another.

this is one of those books that stays with you.

two sisters in 1939 france find themselves having to survive the war in completely different ways.

one bends and blends in to keep her home and her daughter alive. the other joins the resistance under the code name the nightingale and leads down airmen to safety.

we were so hyped to find out we each had a copy and were both planning to read it, so we decided to start august strong with this one.

and then life started lifing, so we had to extend our timeline a wee bit.

but it was absolutely worth every minute.

can you tell we were practically losing our minds as we read this book?

it was so layered, there were so many things happening, and these characters…

they’d enrage you, scare you, and then make you feel warm. and at the end of the day you fall in love with them regardless of the choices they make.

i loved the writing style.

it isn’t too complex or convoluted, but the themes are heavy: occupation, complicity, sisterhood, motherhood, survival under fascism. the men might've been on the battlefield, but the women had their own war to fight.

i will never forget the relationship these two sisters shared.

my rating 4.75 stars ⭐

i love that this book doesn’t shy away from the heavy and painful subjects, and it explores deeply human flaws while serving as a stark reminder that there are no winners in war.

mo’s rating 5 stars ⭐
