POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

When I was 8 years old if you asked me what I liked to do, my answer was “climb trees.” All trees were judged based on their climbability. My dad built me the most awesome treehouse in the huge eucalyptus tree in our backyard and I spent most of my time up there. A few years later, my palate matured and I got a ficus tree for my bedroom (like the one in the corner of your insurance agent’s office).

I’ve always been obsessed with nature and especially trees. There are so many different shapes and sizes. They provide homes for countless animals and other plants. They literally give us the air we breathe.

Why wouldn’t I be obsessed with taking photos of trees? 💚

Hot Tip: Turn on gridlines on your camera screen

The Rule of Thirds is a simple composition practice that divides a frame into vertical and horizontal thirds.

You can achieve a visually pleasing composition by placing your subject on one of the lines, where two lines intersect, or by filling the space between two lines with your subject.

You can also use the rule of thirds to divide your composition with blocks of color, texture, or the subject.

Don’t think of the rule of thirds as absolute law - use it as a guideline to motivate balance within your composition.

The Art of Leading Lines in Photography

Leading lines do just what they say - they lead the viewers eye through the photo. Maybe the lines lead them directly to the subject. Maybe they lead the eye through or around the photo. Maybe they function as contrast to balance the image.

Whatever the technical function of the leading lines may be, their most important job is to please the eye.

And, whether subtle or stark, maybe your leading lines will perform a little magic and spark a special feeling 🪄

The dark isn’t the opposite of the light. It’s what lets you find it

When people ask why I started taking photos I usually hesitate… I guess because there is no single reason.

Capturing moments along the journey of life makes me feel useful like I’m contributing to the universal quilt of life and human existence. However short or long we might be here we all share so many experiences and yet every person’s life is so unique.

I guess in the end I do it because it feels good. Who knows why?

The first time I saw this place I was blown away… I was visiting my cousin and his wife in Flagstaff and he said let’s go to the Edge of the World, I think you’d like to take some photos there.

When we got there, I was speechless… you literally stand in the Coconino National Forest on the EDGE of the Mogollon Rim looking down over Sedona.

We were there in the early afternoon and the sunlight was pretty harsh, but I just had to take advantage of the beautiful landscape.

In the end, I think this photo turned out okay… what do you think?

People always say “wow I’ve never heard of that place, it sounds amazing” when I tell them we like to visit San Carlos, Sonora on the Sea of Cortez. I guess it because Mexico is such a big, beautiful, and diverse country it’s easy to miss the hidden gems.

There’s nothing like this place where the ocean meets the Sonoran Desert. And, it’s no surprise why it has captured the hearts of so many. Jacques Cousteau famously called the Sea of Cortez “the Aquarium of the World” for it’s incredible biodiversity. John Steinbeck wrote The Log from the Sea of Cortez after a six week specimen collecting expedition.

If you feel inspired by your photos, give me a follow!

Would you make the trip to take pictures of this hidden gem?
