Arima Spa: On the recommendation of @thesohamgroup architect Eric Gelman who visits Japan annually, we ventured to the geothermic hot springs of Arima, situated near Kobe, for a New Year’s Day renewal. The iron and nutrient-rich golden waters are pumped into the various onsen-ryokan (spa-inns) in the town for guests to enjoy; we availed ourselves of the luxurious Arima Grand Hotel, which did not disappoint in either its onsen experience and its more exclusive Aqua Terrace offerings. With massages by water and hand, and after multiple soaks in the onsen while gazing into the bamboo forest as the sun set, we left relaxed, rejuvenated and in the right headspace to take on anything that the new year could bring. The First Slam Dunk - A Slam Dunk Experience: Japan’s #1 film, surpassing even Avatar 2, is an Anime-style basketball movie! As a lifelong student of the game, Vajra was thrilled to witness Japan’s profound love for basketball. Despite the language barrier, Anita assured Vajra that we’d immerse ourselves in anime’s captivating character development and music. The Aeon Cinema Experience was a cinephile’s dream! The deluxe offering, with business class seating (full beds were already booked!!) and refreshments, made the screening unforgettable. The film felt like a real-time, fast-paced game, with emotional backstories on players, tackling themes from toxic masculinity to grief. We were blown away, forgetting we didn’t speak Japanese! Can’t wait to rewatch with subtitles! The soundtrack on Spotify is now on repeat. #AeonCinema #TheFirstSlamDunk #Anime #Dotonbori #Osaka #Soundtrack

Toji Temple: With the quintessentially Japanese city of Kyoto easily accessible by train from our base in Osaka, we journeyed to the Toji Temple and Gardens. Known for its iconic five-story pagoda, Toji Temple offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and tranquility. The temple’s stunning architecture and meticulously landscaped gardens create a serene escape from the bustle of the city. Arashiyama Bamboo Forest: After visiting the Toji Temple we visited the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest nearby. First we ate the most fulfilling meal of our trip there at restaurant Oku-no-Niwa, where we each ordered large bento-style boxes according to our diets. Anita’s had a chicken katsu with egg, Vajra had both breaded and silken tofu with egg, and both included a soba portion for dipping as well. We delighted in these tastes while in view of the bamboo forest and mountains beyond. Then, as the sun set over this deeply spiritual sanctuary, we took a rickshaw ride into the forest to marvel in their infinite metaphor of flexibility + strength.

A Night of Laughter at Burlesque Osaka! We spent night at Burlesque Osaka in downtown Osaka. As performers entertained the audience with energetic dance routines we enjoyed cabaret performances and comedic acts against a backdrop of vibrant lights and props. We immersed ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Burlesque Osaka, where a vibrant blend of pop-friendly dance, comedic flair, and cabaret performances unfolded before our eyes. The whimsical charm of Burlesque Osaka extended even to its restroom facilities, where cheeky cartoons adorned the walls, adding a playful touch to the overall experience. As @a.b.hodges engaged with the performers, she ask the dancers about their New Year wishes which ranged from aspirations of prosperity to honing their dance skills and to embarking on adventures to America. #BurlesqueOsaka, #Entertainment, #NewYearVibes #OsakaNights #architecturaldesign #designexcellence #architecturalphotography #designinspiration #interiordesign #landmarkarchitecture #contemporaryarchitecture
