This week our sisters Maysen & Ava represented the Zeta chapter of Alpha Omega Epsilon at this year’s convention!

We are excited to see the new ideas they are bringing back to chapter, leadership, and inspiration. 💙🐬✨

Celebrating excellence in STEM!

Congratulations to Beta Zeta sisters Emelia Hachenberger and Delaney Rapp for winning the 2026 National Medical Device Make‑A‑Thon at UT Austin, beating out teams from top universities across the country.

This highly competitive 48-hour event brings together approximately 150 students from over 13 universities across engineering, computer science, and business disciplines to design, prototype, and pitch innovative medical devices addressing real-world healthcare challenges.

Representing Mizzou and the AΩE Beta Zeta Chapter, their team earned the top overall score in the competition. Their winning project focused on improving neonatal temperature sensor patches. Current patches can detach due to infant movement or perspiration, causing monitors to inaccurately read incubator temperature and potentially lead to dangerous overcorrection such as reducing warmth of incubators leading to hypothermia for many infants. Their solution incorporates a proximity sensor that alerts medical staff immediately when skin contact is lost, along with a biocompatible adhesive that activates with body heat and can be safely removed using cooling, and can be safely removed using cooling rather than force reducing harm to fragile neonatal skin.

When reflecting on the experience, Emelia (junior, Biomedical Engineering – Biomechanics emphasis, pursuing a Math minor and Biomaterials certificate) shared: “I had so much fun at MDM! I worked on CAD design modeling, market research, and comparisons to clinical products. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and proud of what our team accomplished.”

Delaney (sophomore, Biomedical Engineering – Bioinformatics emphasis, pursuing a Biomaterials certificate) served as project manager and added:
“I helped organize ideas, assign roles, and research solutions. I also presented our problem and patent strategy to the judges. I’m so thankful for the experience and it was incredibly rewarding.”

Their work reflects the passion and impact AΩE members bring to STEM every day. We’re honored to celebrate their achievement and the bright future they’re building.
