Arrol’s first (paid) commission. Colourful cover artwork squiggles for @glenn_bech’s brutal, genre-bending novel The Fathership, published by @prototypepubs and translated into English from Danish by @thehazertazer.

Arrol tells me the drawing is of a boat, and “it’s upside down.” All I see is a malevolent grin and giddy eyes.

I designed and typeset the book with @a___w___l.

Dear reader, some (belated) interior snapshots of Bricks from the Kiln vol.8.

This volume is littered with letters. It takes the double meaning of the word as its point of dispatch, inviting recipients to think through and respond to — directly and indirectly — ideas around correspondence, addressing and alphabets. Contained within the twenty-six eight-page signatures of BFTK vol.8 are:

A – PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR SHADOW IN THAT MIRROR Chang Yuchen (@yuchenyuchen)
B – BESTIARY FOR A NON-GENETIC DESCENDANT Bhanu Kapil
C – THROW STUFF AWAY Hannah Regel (@hannahregel)
D – THE MOON HATH XXX DAYS: LETTERS FOR LETTERS Helen Marten
E, F – WHAT DOES THE LOSS FEEL LIKE? Meg Miller (@meggmillerr)
G – LIGHT UP THE A Kate Briggs
H, I – THE POSTCODE CONNECTION Rebecca Ross (@handsinmachines)
J – (LETTER) TO S… LABYRINTH-CORTEX Michèle Métail, trans. Thea Petrou
K, L – RACKETY CORRESPONDENCES / A CORRESPONDING RACKET Nisha Ramayya (@headslice)
M – THE COIN OF THE REALM Lucie Elven (@lucieelven)
N – UNFOLDING FOLDED FANTASIES: A CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE SEATED SCRIBE Fatema Abdoolcarim (@fatemaabdoolcarim)
O – DEAR DEAREST DEAR MOTHER Alice Butler (@aliceelisabethbutler)
P – / DON’T BOTHER THE CREASE Tice Cin (@tice.cin)
Q, R – FEELING LETTERS, SEEING BLUE Gemma Blackshaw (@gemmablackshaw)

I finally got to open my package from @bricks.from.the.kiln 💌 and spent the afternoon (with Máni as co-reader) with this beautiful, brilliant volume (as well as with @matthew__j__s ‘s tender, informative, poetic postcard project on coins, typography & clichés).

My essay about a greeting-card-sized watercolour portrait of a Seated Scribe, made in Ottoman Istanbul, appears alongside such smart, innovative and gorgeous pieces about alphabet, aerograms, letters to Bessie, postcodes, lullaby, and eh? I am truly honoured to have my work included in this volume—thank you to all the contributors for teaching me so much with your words.

And biggest thanks to @matthew__j__s and @a___w___l for inviting me to contribute a piece on correspondence. ‘Unfolding folded fantasies: a correspondence with the Seated Scribe’ is an iteration of a paper I was invited to present at @courtauldres by @aliceelisabethbutler back in 2022! This essay looks closely at the luxuriously intimate portrait of an Ottoman scribe, attributed to the Venetian painter Gentile Bellini. The portrait was made in 1479-81 in Istanbul during a Venetian-Ottoman exchange. The essay looks at the history of this cross-political/cultural/artistic correspondence, while imaging the unknowns connected to this image, and unfolding the queer fantasies and pleasure embedded in the painting. The painting is part of @gardnermuseum. Thank you to the museum for allowing us to reproduce the image.

You can order your own copy of this impeccably designed, fine volume directly from @bricks.from.the.kiln. Send me a message if you’d like me to mail you a loose signature of ‘Unfolding folded fantasies’ 💌

SAVE THE DATE: On The Air, an exhibition organized by Darling Green, opens June 13 at Ulterior Gallery.

On The Air is a show about spoken words becoming artworks, and artworks that are only fully realized when they appear in public. It draws parallels between broadcasting, dictation, and publication as ways of making the inner outer, focusing on how a thing can be spoken into being, and strategies of immediacy that facilitate a work’s exit from the studio and into the world. The works in this show are itinerant artworks that happen to stop here for a moment, before they continue their journey, being passed hand to hand, or worn around town, or even stepped on in the street.

Featuring JJJJJerome Ellis, Kima / Lauren Kima Graycar, Lily Greenham & Andrew Walsh-Lister, Yusuf Hassan / BlackMass Publishing, Institute for the Study of the Urtext, Craig Leonard, Hanne Lippard, Glen Rubsamen & Rita McBride, Rick Myers, Aki Onda, and Rujuta Rao.

During the exhibition, Ulterior Gallery will mount a rotating presentation of artworks by gallery artists in the viewing room, connecting with On The Air.
