POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For Off Assignment, I wrote the true story of my birthplace, where snakes came and ate all the birds and where the USDA (in collaboration with the Dept of the Interior and the Dept of Defense) rained mice down from the sky in response.

Deep thanks to Erica Berry, Aube Rey Lescure, and Colleen Kinder for giving me the opportunity to be part of the Encyclopedia of Change. I worked harder than you might find reasonable on these 500 words. I hope you like them.

N.B.: Earlier this year, the Northern Mariana Islands were devastated by two super typhoons back-to-back. Before she came to stay with me in North Carolina, while the island recovers, my mother was without power and water and transportation for months.

So I’ve been thinking, even more than usual, about climate injustice, intergenerational poverty, and spiritual extractivism (individuals or industries appropriating and commodifying Indigenous knowledge/tradition without meaningful reciprocity). Ideas that I hope are spectering here.

SOLAR SYSTEM is back for 2025 with a special DJ set from Abby Echiverri and two live sets from the organizers, A Tripp and Fuzzyy.

Abby Echiverri is a multi-dimensional musician whose practice spans production, DJing, live performance, and audio engineering. Classically trained in violin, flute, piano, and vocals—with a youth spent digging for records and studying recording, and years spent manufacturing and maintaining audio equipment for studios and clubs—she possesses a rare combination of talent, taste, and the technical fluency to express it through sound systems. Behind critically acclaimed releases on @thebunkerny and @dfarecs, her most recent record, Ubi Sunt, sees her leaning further into a singular blend of infectious polyrhythms and dub-inflected sound design. Not afraid of leaving the studio—her unforgettable live set at Fourth World a few years ago still echoes—Abby continues to DJ regularly in NYC and tours globally as a member of @lcdsoundsystem.

At the heart of SOLAR SYSTEM is a one-of-a-kind hi-fi system (@echoic.systems) operating entirely off the grid. Powered by batteries charged with solar energy and buttressed by on-site panels, SOLAR SYSTEM rises and falls with the sun, offering a glimpse of a smaller, more sustainable musical future.

3:45-4:30 FUZZYY (LIVE)

Folks, we do a whole lotta plannin’ down here at the ol’ Fourth World Operations Depot & Mercantile Exchange, but truth be told, the real magic of it all tends to hatch somewhere in between the margins of scheduling and sanity. Hell, you might even say we’ve become something of a magnet for things that tend to… defy easy explanation.

Take last year, for example. Why, in all our years trawling the boulevard, we’ve never seen a venue of any sizable stature have to stop a show - let alone one scheduled tighter than a cornbread muffin in a toddler’s fist - on account of the entire electrical system being on the cusp of some kind of full-blown thermonuclear event.

But as soon as we were ushered down into that cramped basement utility room, y’know, of the
⚠️ Danger: High Voltage ⚠️ variety, and we were met with an elderly gentleman in grease-stained coveralls who was pointin’ at all sorts of meters and manifolds, goin’ a mile a minute in a language we couldn’t even begin to parse, boyyy, we knew we were in for somethin’ else.

And when our handy friend there finally opened the most sizable electrical box of em of all, revealing a whole backwoods tangle of frayed wire, melted tubing, and bubbling conduit, all fused together and pulsing like a Cronenberg critter in heat, we realized just how sideways things had gone. And while y’all were still languishing in the confines of the walled garden above, bellies full of complimentary meat byproduct and nary a care in this world, that same man looked us dead in the eyes, finger trained on whatever baked up catastrophe lie oozing before us, and uttered the only thing we had the wherewithal to understand:

“This… this very bad.”

And for a moment - just a moment - we did consider the possibility that we were all about to perish.

Release Day Today!! ✨✨ 2 Know U EP by @abelsonlive & @xhosamusic

toucan sounds starts 2025 with a collaboration between Abelson Live, aka Brian Abelson, and XHOSA.

First up is the original House mix of Abelson Live and XHOSA’s ‘2 Know U’, a low-slung groove with bouncing chords and pumping drums that bring a timeless vibe while XHOSA’s vocal adds soul.

Their Acid mix then layers in subtle 303 lines that bubble up through the mix and grow evermore central to the groove before XHOSA flips the original into a humid and steamy sound with smartly rated vocals shimmering about the mix next to spoken word snippets and seductive pads.

Next, ‘2 Know U’ is remixed by Solar System, consisting of Aaron Tripp and Brian Abelson, known for curating open-air, solar-powered parties in New York under the same monicker. They up the melodics as lush chords bring cosmic rays of light, the original vocal taking on a heavenly charm.

Lastly, JWords steps up to remix Abelson Live and XHOSA’s original track with her jackin’ version featuring rugged drums and rave-ready whistles, which will blow up the 'floor next to the harmonised vocals.

Over the last 10 years, XHOSA has established herself as a trailblazing artist within the New York scene and beyond, playing anywhere from VIA FEST to SXSW.

Here, she joins forces with Abelson Live, whose versatile sounds have appeared on labels like Beats in Space, Sinderlyn, and Love Injection (with Jennifer Vanilla) and once before on the celebrated Brooklyn label Toucan Sounds, where he worked with John Barera on their collaborative album, ‘The Arc’.
