A little more from my time painting in Abingdon.

With South Holston Lake being lowered to winter pool, I was surrounded by beautiful contrasts of blue and orange. The sunlight striking this particular point caught my attention, and I thought it would make a manageable subject given the time constraints of the competition.

What I especially loved was the cooler, almost lavender-blue of the distant shoreline, which accentuated a backlit yellow tree stretching out over the point.

The colors in my painting are nowhere near what I had envisioned, and the paint was simply too wet to develop it any further, so I decided to stop.

But I can still vividly remember what I saw that afternoon, and I’m looking forward to getting this one back on the easel while those impressions are still fresh in my mind.

Sometimes a plein-air painting is a finished work, and sometimes it’s the beginning of something more.

Both my wife and I are very involved with disadvantaged veterans in southern NJ as part of the Brigantine Elks Veterans Service Committee. In this photo we’re delivering folding chairs to the occupants of “Veterans Village”. The lady to the right of my wife Camille is the driving force behind rehabilitating an abandoned motel into housing units for homeless vets. She manages the property, gets the grants, and person buys a lot of supplies. It now houses about 20. Currently roofing is going on and hopefully another 10 units will be habitable. The chairs work to permit the vets to lounge outside yet take the chairs inside as appropriate. Behind her back I refer to her as Saint Gladys. She’s also very involved with the South Jersey Stand Down which is a major spring & fall activity that the Elks provide set up & take down labor for. I’m involved with rounding up the volunteers for the effort. At the meeting my pitch is to ask for young volunteers. I then define young as “age 80 or less and two joint replacements or less”. It always gets a chuckle. To the left of my wife is Karen the chair of the Veterans Committee, an incredibly hard working lady. The committee probably averages 2-5 major activities a month. Karen’s husband is a veteran of Vietnam and awarded a bronze star.

Today is opening day!

I’m delighted to share that my painting, Sunset Autumn Glow II, is included in the International Guild of Realism’s 2026 Fall Salon Online Juried Exhibition, opening today, October 15, and continuing through December 20.

This painting has a particularly special place in my artistic journey. Originally painted in 2021, I returned to it several years later with a different understanding of light, atmosphere, and what I wanted the painting to communicate.

Revisiting it gave me the opportunity to bring the painting closer to what I remembered and felt about that luminous autumn evening.

I’m honored to have it included alongside the work of so many accomplished representational artists from around the world.

My sincere thanks to the International Guild of Realism for including my work in this exhibition!

A luminous sunset sky casts warm golden light across autumn trees. Light filters through the branches and illuminates the foliage, contrasting with deeper shadows and creating a soft, atmospheric evening landscape.

Installation day for my drawing “Chairman of the Bored” She ended up in a very special collector’s home in Santa Ana. It’s always so hard to say goodbye to works that you have spent countless hours on. That’s why this one is different. This collector is my mom! Some say when you sell to your family it doesn’t really count… I say yes it does! Incredibly touched that she wanted this piece in her home.
