I asked dietitian @abbeyskitchen which myth she’d bust if she could only pick one, and she didn’t hesitate: seed oils.

The idea that sunflower, safflower and canola oil are inflammatory is everywhere, but Abbey explains that the research doesn’t back it up. These omega-6-rich oils aren’t shown to increase inflammation, and in some cases they may even lower it compared to butter and lard. Canola, the one that gets called out most, actually has one of the best omega-6 to omega-3 ratios of any cooking oil. Her take? Seed oils are guilty by association.

The real issue is the deep-fried, highly processed food they show up in, not the canola oil in your salad dressing. And she makes a point I think matters a lot: rejecting affordable, accessible oils in favour of grass-fed butter says more about wellness culture’s exclusivity than about health.

Have you cut seed oils out because of something you saw online?
