I’ve always loved finding a wall that has evolved over time, where neglect creates an eco system and destruction in equal measure. The restoration @aberglasney sympathetically considers this transition leaving space for architecture and nature to coexist.
This piece will be part of Patrwm Gymru 2 in Aberglasney Gardens. Joining Andrew @llwygawl and I this time will be Tilla @james_and_tilla_waters with their beautiful ceramics. The opening night will be on Friday 13th November from 5 to 8pm.

Autumn’s Embrace

Introducing Alison Ross-

Alison Ross is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and poet based in North Wales.
She creates figurative paintings exploring memory, stillness, human connection and the subtle space between the ordinary and the imagined.
Poetry is an integral part of her creative practice. Her poems and paintings often develop alongside one another, each helping to shape the atmosphere and emotional language of the other.
Her figures inhabit quiet interiors and atmospheric coastal landscapes, often accompanied by animals, moonlight or symbolic elements. With touches of magical realism and an open-ended, cinematic quality, the paintings invite viewers to pause and discover their own stories within them.

I am delighted that Alison will be joining us at Aberglasney Gardens for The Autumn Gathering late this month.

The Autumn Gathering Opens from October 28th till November 6th.
October 10-6pm
November 10:30-4:30pm
Entrance fee will apply

Open Evening 31st October 5-8pm with free entrance to the gardens.
@coaltowncoffee will be serving a warming selection of coffee based drinks.

Great day with Andrew @llwygawl. yesterday, discussing loosening up and tightening up of ideas and approaches for take two of Patrwm Gymru @aberglasney in November.
Really excited that @james_and_tilla_waters will be joining us with their beautifully balanced and subtly patterned pieces.
This time I’ve started with what I see, how pattern is ever present beneath our feet, wrapped around us etc etc.
So what to make? I’ve always loved brooches, I have a whole display cabinet full of them….. selecting a piece, depending on my mood, on any given day. I think of them as small canvas’s worn by a man or woman, what do they say? How do people respond to you because of the piece you’ve chosen to wear? I’m fascinated by the eternal triangle of maker, wearer, viewer.
The show opens on Friday 13th November 😂. More information to follow.

The Autumn Gathering
Studio Cennen’s second exhibition at The Mansion, Aberglasney Gardens

28th October – 6th November
Open daily from 10am

Open Evening — Saturday 31st October, 5–8pm
With Coaltown Coffee serving delicious warming drinks, and free entry to the gardens.

We return for a second show at the mansion at Aberglasney at an auspicious time, at the twilight of the year when the harvest of the land, allotments and kitchen gardens have mostly been gathered in. The organic Walled Kitchen Garden here led by Hattie Kerrs has been ablaze with the rich colours of Autumn flowers and produce, with the Crab Apple arch dripping with colourful gourds and the rich burgundy wine tones of Amaranth setting off the eye popping yellow of the Sunflowers. The sunny, warm days of this season contrast with the slight chill of the evenings.

And this is where we straddle the light and dark, the day and night - the Celts had two seasons - Beltain /Summer and Samhain / Winter - but this is the blurring time, the nuanced time of the evening before we dip into full darkness, the liminal space where later societies believed the veil between the real world and the spirit world was at its thinnest…when some cultures would lay an extra space at the table for their lost loved ones and others would light large fires to deter the evils spirits away.

In my studio is a space which is permanently in a state of flux. I suppose it started with an addiction to the nature table in school, picking up and dropping off became a habit which hasn’t changed. Natural detritus, broken bits and bobs, gifts, partly made pieces, ‘errors’ samples, seasonal offerings. An ever changing array of exciting possibilities, each piece with its own story.
Combinations, juxtapositions, materials for casting, working and inspiring. Some may say it’s messy, to me it’s essential.
This November I’m collaborating again with @llawgawl @aberglasney. There are three of us this time, very exciting. More about that later.
