🎥 He Called Me, I Named Him by Abondance Matanda

We are very proud to release this powerful new commission by poet and heritage trainee Abondance Matanda, a response to the Nkisi Kozo power figure she researched as part of Lost & Found.

This enigmatic object was discovered on the Thames foreshore by mudlark Nicola White (@tidelineart) and originates from Central Africa (or a diasporic community). Abondance’s creative response traces its journey across the ocean and explores the entangled relationship and identities between the Congo River and the Thames.

It was a joy to have such a large room of engaged people to speak to all about Temperance and Deptford Bands of Hope. Thanks also to all those who ‘took the pledge’ and sung the recruiting song with me!

This September, see ten Thames treasures like never before in a pop-up exhibition of photography by Hannah Smiles 🖼️

In Lost & Found, ten heritage trainees (aged 21–26) were tasked with revealing the untold maritime histories of Deptford and Greenwich using objects found on the Thames foreshore by mudlark Nicola White. From sacred figures to medical waste, from barnacles to broken crockery – these are things with the power to take us on journeys into other places and cultures, journeys into the past and even into imagined futures. Together, they shed light on the hidden networks of power, meaning and movement that make the Thames such a powerful repository of alternative histories.

This year marks 10 years of my archive #friendsonfilm !!

To be lensed is to be loved!!

As I prepare for my next and second solo show, i’ve been reflecting a lot to where I was at in 2015; just about to enter foundation year in fashion design (lol), just about to turn 18, big depresso, still undecided about how I wanted to move in the world, meeting so many people that till today I get hold and love on. I’m shaped by so many of these bonds, these connections whether short or long are all a blessing. And who knew photography would take me to all the places I’ve been. Never underestimate the power of believing and encouraging others, it’s what made me finally take the leap and I never looked back. I’m so grateful 🥲

Foreal. Thank you for riding with me - it’s going to be an epic year. Here is 10, 20, 30, 40 + years more of documenting 🥂
