🧭 Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose - a nonfiction book featuring Lewis & Clark

*The following are favorite series, just represented by the first books. Dad wanted to make sure I was clear on this.*

🔪The Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn - follows a man trained as a counterterrorism agent by the CIA

🏰The Kingsbridge series by Ken Follett - Set in England, each books follow a cast of characters in a different century - from the 1200s to the 1700s.

🏃The Jack Ryan and Jack Ryan Jr. series by Tom Clancy - an expensive world following secret agents in the CIA.

🎤🎶✨Favorite Pop Stars, Girl Bands and Boy Bands of the 90s/00s ✨🎶🎤

We’re reading Honey for Celadon Books @celadonbooks Read Together Challenge and it got us thinking and reminiscing over our favorite pop stars and girl or boy bands from the 90s to early 2000s era.

My personal favorites are:

🎤 I grew up first loving and literally sleeping on New Kid on the Block sheets, probably starting in first grade. I had their dolls, their clothing merch; everything. 🤣 So, they were definitely my original favorites. @nkotb (I know some of their music was released late 80s but I definitely listened to them in the early 90s the most!)

🎤 Another big fave of mine is Cristina Aguilera because she had such a power house voice and she was from Pennsylvania too. 🧞

🎤 And I can’t forget Britney. We all gave that schoolgirl look a try because she was so iconic. I recently read her book and I think we need to give Brit a break after all she’s been through. Let the woman live and dance! 💃🏼 Just like we all danced to her hard work for so many years. @britneyspears

Big thanks to @tandemcollectiveglobal @tundrabooks and all the wonderful bookstagrammers I read AND THEN THERE WAS US by Kern Carter with this month! This reading was so much more well-rounded and informed in having our discussions, far exceeded my expectations for the readalong!

CWs: emotional and physical abuse, death of parent, grief, depiction of panic attacks, drug and alcohol use

AND THEN THERE WAS US follows Coi, an eighteen-year-old aspiring fashion designer dealing with the aftermath of being kicked out of her mother’s house after years of abuse, without contact for almost 5 years.

When an unexpected accident leaves her mother unresponsive in the hospital, Coi has to contend with her mother’s accusative family and her own confusion around her grief and love for someone who’s caused her so much pain.

I really appreciate books for younger readers that take on such serious themes. While the writing sometimes felt too reliant on exposition, Carter handles the difficult nature of abuse well, allowing Coi to feel all her feelings and having adult voices in the book emphasize that blame or shame is not something Coi needs to carry for herself.

Everyone’s ways of coping are different, and while each of us in the readalong had different opinions about how things were wrapped up in this book, I’m glad it allowed for such discussion. I do hope that in an unseen epilogue many of the adults in Coi’s family are actively working to overcome their own harmful behaviours.

I am so excited to be starting a new (and my second this month😍) readalong for A Great Country by @shilpigowda! Its publication date was March 24th and I’ve been seeing this one all over Insta.

Synopsis~Pacific Hills, California: Gated communities, ocean views, well-tended lawns, serene pools, and now the new home of the Shah family. For the Shah parents, who came to America twenty years earlier with little more than an education and their new marriage, this move represents the culmination of years of hard work and dreaming. For their children, born and raised in America, success is not so simple.
For the most part, these differences among the five members of the Shah family are minor irritants, arguments between parents and children, older and younger siblings. But one Saturday night, the twelve-year-old son is arrested. The fallout from that event will shake each family member’s perception of themselves as individuals, as community members, as Americans, and will lead each to consider: how do we define success? At what cost comes ambition? And what is our role and responsibility in the cultural mosaic of modern America?
For readers of The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, A Great Country explores themes of immigration, generational conflict, social class and privilege as it reconsiders the myth of the model minority and questions the price of the American dream.

I just loved The Vanishing Half and Such as Fun Age, so I think I am really going to enjoy this one.

📚📚 TANDEM READALONG 📚📚

I am so excited to be starting a new readalong for And Then There Was Us by Kern Carter! Today just so happens to be its Pub Day as well, which is awesome.

Synopsis:
After years of physical and verbal abuse from her mother, fourteen year old Coi moved in with her father, and together, they created a peaceful life. But now, four years later, that peace is shattered when her mother dies, soon after reaching out to Coi.

While Coi struggles to find kindness in her heart for the woman who did nothing but hurt her, her mother's passing does help reopen the door to her mother's side of the family. It's only through reconnecting with her estranged family members, especially her younger half-sister Kayla, that Coi's long-held views about her mother are challenged.

And when Coi begins to see visions of her mother in her dreams, she is forced to ask herself what it means to forgive and be forgiven, and, most importantly, what it means to be a family.

This is going to be a challenging and emotional read.
