→ Aleesha Callahan, founder of About Futures, a digital magazine focused on new materials, regenerative design and low-impact residential design.

Formerly editor of Habitus and Indesign Live, sharing a journalist perspective as to how design culture talks about better ways to build and opens up the wider question of how creative practice can shift behaviour, not just aesthetics.

→ Nickolas Gurtler brings a refined, material-led eye to residential design, shaped by a career that crosses luxury fashion, furniture and interiors.

His Melbourne studio works across private homes, multi-residential and commercial projects, with a clear focus on detail, atmosphere and longevity. For this discussion, he shares what responsible residential design looks like in real projects.

→ Joshua Ellis leads Cultivated, a program that restores and reworks authentic furniture and lighting, keeping high-value design out of landfill and extending the life of pieces already in circulation.

His work sits at the practical end of sustainability: repair, reuse, skilled makers, product stewardship and a direct challenge to disposable fit-out culture.

→ Anne-Maree Sargeant (AMS):(ADA / DESIGN-MADE. podcast). A design journalist, advocate and former editor-at-large of Belle, she brings deep industry knowledge across furniture, interiors, design culture and IP advocacy.

20 months. 35 events. 2,000 people through the BINQ Lift n Slide doors…!

The Better Building Exchange has closed at 427 Albert Street, Brunswick to make way for ParkLife 2. And what a run it’s been. We started BBX in May 2024 with a simple idea: less talk, more action. A place where people could come together to explore ideas, skills, technologies and relationships to improve our cities and regions.

Together with a number of values-aligned businesses and organisations, we hosted over 35 public events. We also contributed over $35,000 in direct value to values-aligned organisations through complimentary event space hire, who just needed a room to do good work in.

Thank you to everyone who hosted, attended or took the mic. It’s been a privilege to watch the space used exactly the way it was intended... BBX isn’t done and we’re
already thinking about what comes next…!

"Sustainability" has become marketing-speak. And I think we all know it.

Next Tuesday I'm part of a panel for Melbourne Design Week, hosted by @authentic_design_alliance - asking the question directly: how did it get like this, and what does genuine impact actually look like?

I'll be joined by @aleeshacallahan from @about_futures__, Joshua Ellis from @cultivated_au and Anne-Maree Sargeant from @authentic_design_alliance - talking material choices, nature-positive practice, product stewardship and how to talk about your work honestly without greenwashing or going silent.

The evening kicks off with an exclusive guided tour of RE:BORN, a zero-waste exhibition by @cultivated_au with @romancewasborn. Then we get into it.

📍Tuesday 19 May | 5.45 pm for 6.00 pm
📍Artbank: 18-24 Down Street, Collingwood
📍Tickets: $30 + GST + bf
📍Humanitix: 🔗in bio 👆🏼
