The marathon continues next week but grateful to be a @aandmbjj purple belt. All the time and effort my coaches put into me. Between @dru_phoenix and @troythefighterguy I’m right where I need to be. I wouldn’t be here without them or my training partners who push me every day to be the best version of myself. 😈😈😈

This achievement was 18 years in the making. I started martial arts in 2008.

I am not saying that to brag. Quite the opposite. I think it shows that our journeys in martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu, and life are rarely linear.

My journey has been far from perfect. It has had plenty of ups, downs, setbacks, and shortcomings. As a kid, I expected much more out of this journey. I thought I would become a UFC fighter, a BJJ world champion, earn my black belt in my twenties, travel the world teaching seminars, have cool highlight reels, and, shit, let’s throw a Porsche in there too.

But even with all the unexpected twists and turns, I would not have it any other way.

The friends, students, coaches, mentors, and people I have met along the way have made every part of the journey worth it. Maybe my path was meant to happen this way, regardless of what I originally wanted. Honestly, I think the journey turned out better.

I have met amazing people, had unforgettable experiences, and developed my character in ways I never expected. Sometimes what looks like a shortcoming is actually a blessing. I have an incredible support system and the best students anyone could ask for.

Martial arts is a vehicle for character development and human potential. The people you meet, the trials you face, and the setbacks you overcome will develop you more than you could ever imagine. Trust the process, even when things do not look the way you thought they would.

I met the love of my life, Sandra, on the mats. That alone is the greatest blessing martial arts has ever given me. I honestly do not know how she deals with me. I love you so much. Thank you for giving me the best life I could have ever imagined.

Ed, thank you for being the bald, sexy man that you are. More importantly, thank you for your friendship, belief, and support. You have been a blessing in my life, and receiving my black belt from you is an incredible honor.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. It means more to me than I can express.

Thank you to @__marlenii21, @vulkan33, @gr8_alex, and @JiuJitsu_ballerina, for being lifelong friends and always supporting me
