At The LP, we make art, celebrate culture, and build community in everyday places—ongoing practices that are essential to our well-being. You’re invited to embody creativity at the The LP Storefront during our Liberation Series, where we connect with our neighbors, share nourishing meals, and embody liberation through artmaking. Here are the details: 🗓️Friday, Sept 11 ⏰6:00-9:00 PM 📍The LP Storefront Our theme for Fall Lib Series is “Joy is a Rhythm,” an embodied practice of collective memory and future-making through hip-hop music, dance, gameplay, and more. Our first event is “Rap, Memory & Collective Voice,” where neighbors can learn how New York’s hip-hop scene responded to 9/11, and practice writing new bars over beats together. The healing energies of music will fill the room, starting with a live violin performance by @jacq__jypsy and closing with a fire set by DJ Rello. 🔊 Led by artist partner Fei Li (@_fei.li_) at @accentedprojects and local artist JMacDonough (@guardup), this first gathering brings Bed-Stuy’s cultural traditions to life, starting with neighbors passing a verse. Mahjong at Saratoga Park, Tuesday, 07/07, 4-6pm 112 Howard Ave, Brooklyn ✨✨✨ street culture survives because it never fully separated itself from everyday life. it still belongs to sidewalks, basketball courts, subway platforms, parks. to places where art remembers that it shares the world with groceries, laughter, arguments, pigeons, old men bent over chessboards. perhaps every neighborhood possesses such quotidian institutions. we rarely describe them that way. mama mac recently asked whether i would organize mahjong in the park. the invitation moved me more than i expected. bringing mahjong into saratoga park, then, means something more than introducing a chinese game into a public space. one neighborhood ritual would be meeting another. dominoes already speak there. chess already speaks there. rap, dance…the park is full of languages. mahjong might enter simply as one more voice joining a conversation long underway. watching mama mac has taught me something i did not know i needed to learn. community cannot always be organized. sometimes it must be recognized. she never imposes life upon the park. she notices the life already present and gently rearranges it, just enough that people begin to see one another differently. what a rare artistic gift. the highest form of curation may have little to do with selecting exceptional people for exceptional spaces. it may consist in revealing the extraordinary capacities hidden inside ordinary afternoons. what she practices, i have come to believe, is also how solidarity actually grows. out of repeated coexistence, more than out of agreement. people imagine social change beginning with ideas. perhaps it begins earlier. with rhythms. there is something close to miraculous in how games ask strangers to trust a shared set of rules before asking them to share beliefs. i hope the mahjong table becomes one small contribution to that larger choreography. another recurring gesture in the park’s own vocabulary. the park has been practicing this lesson far longer than any of us. people become a community slowly. one shared afternoon at a time. it has always known this.

From Metaphor to Social Practice ii this realization changed how i think about my mahjong ritual. at first, mahjong had entered my work as a diasporic symbol. i imagined it as a participatory performance that might open conversations about memory and belonging. i never seriously imagined making the mahjong ritual at all until i wandered into the energy field that @od.as.is @notorious.wednesdays notorious wednesday had already built. every wednesday, uncle chin’s lounge becomes something institutional language cannot quite hold. rappers, singers, djs, and artists return week after week. nobody waits for permission from gatekeepers. there is remarkably little hierarchy in the room. people come, simply, to witness one another. the people in it have folded themselves into each other’s growth. only after sitting in that room for a while did i begin to imagine mahjong differently. perhaps the ritual was never about mahjong at all. perhaps it was about the longing of the diasporic body to enter that same ecology of celebration. i now think the mahjong table is an invitation into a different social relation. competition is there, but competition is braided inseparably with companionship. the game moves through conversation and waiting, through the reading of gestures and the celebration of other people’s winning. the artwork, if there is one, is the social intelligence that gathers in the air above the table. for some time, i have run a separate mahjong gathering on tuesdays, a table of its own, and i have decided to bring it into wednesday, alongside od @od.as.is and the world he has been tending there. it is an admission that my table does not need its own door. it needs to dissolve into a living thing already in motion, to become one more current in a river that was flowing before i arrived and will go on flowing. to merge the tuesday ritual into wednesday is to stop curating my own carnival and to accept the humbler, larger gift of joining someone else’s. no longer a performance about community but a chair pulled up to its actual table.

From Metaphor to Social Practice i for a long time, i believed my work was about play. SMUGGLE BACK THROUGH PLAY grew out of that belief, an attempt to think through children’s games and ancestral ritual/canival as ways of resisting capitalism and the long afterlife of colonial modernity. through bakhtin and marina warner, angela carter and umberto eco, bell hooks and patricia hill collins, i came to understand play as a space where hierarchies loosen for a while, identities turn fluid. and looking back, i see that the carnival i made lived mostly as a metaphor. it was staged, represented. it was a proposition about carnival rather than carnival itself. then something shifted after last saturday’s screening. the evening stopped being a presentation of artworks somewhere along the way and became a social space, animated by people who had been building their bonds long before any of us thought to call it an event. my organizing collaborators, mac @guardup and accent 重音社 @accentsisters , were people who had spent years cultivating community. the night was joyful. joy arrived because a community was already there. for the first time, i witnessed something that slipped free of the metaphorical frame i had been working inside. this was carnival as social practice. in the performance, i had argued that capitalism absorbs carnival by turning it into entertainment. following eco, i understood how our present produces a permanent spectacle in which transgression is endlessly simulated. disney, the festival, the immersive experience, much of contemporary art itself, all of them promising liberation while remaining safely consumable. but what happened at the screening event would not be absorbed that way. it refused to fold back into spectacle, because the performances existed for a reason the market could not reach: the celebration rose out of relationships, and relationships are the one thing capital has never learned to manufacture, only to imitate. slowly, i began to understand that carnival is, after all, an ecology.
