Does your lower back stay arched even when you’re lying flat on your back?

You get into bed, lie on your back, and there’s this big gap between your lower back and the mattress.

You try to relax, but your back won’t settle. You bend your knees, shift your hips, roll onto your side, or tuck a pillow under your legs just to get comfortable.

And the moment you straighten your legs again, you feel that familiar pull across your lower back. It’s as though your hips and lower back won’t let you settle into the mattress, no matter how hard you try to relax.

Your pelvis may be resting in an anterior pelvic tilt, exaggerating the natural curve of your lower back and contributing to the tension you feel even when you’re doing absolutely nothing.

This position can also influence how comfortably you stand, walk, and move throughout your day.

Stretching your hips, strengthening your core, or consciously tucking your pelvis under may offer temporary relief, but what about the fascial restrictions limiting your pelvis’s ability to move freely?

Structural Integration addresses the fascial relationships between your pelvis, spine, hips, and legs to improve mobility and support a more balanced relationship with gravity.

The goal isn’t to flatten your lower back. It’s to allow your pelvis and spine greater freedom to move without forcing yourself into a different position.

If stretching and strengthening haven’t changed the way your lower back feels, isn’t it time to find out what you’re missing?

You get up from your desk and need a few steps before you can stand completely upright.

Your hips feel stiff when you start walking. Your lower back aches after a long drive. Getting out of bed in the morning takes longer than it used to.

And somewhere along the way, you’ve accepted that this is just what happens as you get older.

But what if years of sitting have changed the way your entire structure moves?

Think about how many hours you’ve spent with your hips bent at 90 degrees, your pelvis resting against a chair, and your spine supported by something other than its own structural organization.

Day after day. Year after year.

Your hip flexors spend hours in a shortened position. Your pelvis has fewer opportunities to move through its full range. The fascia surrounding your hips, thighs, abdomen, and lower back is continually exposed to the same limited positions.

Over time, this can contribute to stiffness, restricted mobility, and discomfort when standing or walking.

And because your fascia is a continuous three-dimensional network, restrictions around your hips don’t necessarily stay in your hips.

They can influence how your pelvis moves, how your lower back participates in movement, and how freely your legs extend beneath you when you walk.

So you stretch your hip flexors. Strengthen your glutes. Get a massage for your lower back.

You feel better temporarily, but the discomfort keeps returning.

What if you’ve been working on individual muscles when the restriction involves your entire fascial system?

Structural Integration addresses the relationships between your feet, legs, pelvis, spine, and rib cage, working with the fascia to improve tissue mobility and support greater freedom of movement.

Because getting out of a chair shouldn’t feel like you have to unfold your body one painful piece at a time.

When was the last time you stood up from a chair without having to straighten yourself out before taking your first step?

What if breathing deeply no longer felt like something you had to force?

Maybe you’ve noticed yourself lifting your chest, rolling your shoulders back, or taking an exaggerated inhale just to feel like you’re getting enough air.

How many times have you caught yourself raising your shoulders toward your ears just to take a deep breath?

This is something I frequently see with clients who come in complaining of chronic neck pain. They may not recognize how much they’re recruiting their neck and shoulder muscles just to breathe.

Imagine repeating that movement thousands of times a day.

Your neck and shoulders are working harder than they need to, and the tension becomes part of your everyday breathing pattern.

Your ribs are designed to expand in multiple directions. Your diaphragm needs room to move. Your spine, shoulders, abdomen, and surrounding tissues all contribute to the rhythm of each breath.

When restrictions develop throughout these fascial relationships, your body may begin relying more heavily on the muscles around your neck and shoulders to assist with breathing.

And if you’re constantly lifting your shoulder girdle with every inhale, how much of your neck tension could be connected to the way you’re breathing?

Breathing is meant to be a natural, coordinated movement, not something that requires constant effort.

Structural Integration addresses the fascial relationships throughout your body to improve tissue mobility, create more freedom through the rib cage, and support a more natural breathing pattern.

What could change in your neck, shoulders, and entire structure if you no longer needed to lift your shoulders to take a full breath?

Force and contraction are not sustainable ways to reclaim your body’s natural alignment.

How many times a day do you catch yourself slouching, pull your shoulders back, lift your chest, and straighten your spine because you think you’re correcting your posture?

But how long can you actually maintain that position before your shoulders start to ache, your neck gets tired, or your lower back begins to feel uncomfortable?

You may think you’re correcting one problem while unknowingly creating tension somewhere else.

You don’t correct a fascial pattern by contracting yourself in the opposite direction.

Your fascia is a continuous three-dimensional web of connective tissue that runs throughout your entire body. Restrictions in one area can influence how other areas move, how your weight is distributed, and how your body organizes itself in gravity.

When you force yourself into what you believe is the correct posture, you’re not necessarily changing the restrictions that are influencing your alignment. You’re simply using muscular effort to hold yourself somewhere else.

And the moment you stop holding, you return to the same familiar position.

Structural Integration takes a different approach. By working with the fascia to improve tissue mobility and the relationships between different parts of your structure, we create opportunities for your body to find greater ease, balance, and freedom of movement.

What if better posture wasn’t something you had to constantly think about, correct, or hold?

What if your body could find its natural alignment without forcing it?

Is scar tissue limiting your range of motion? Are you starting to experience pain, discomfort, or even numbness in areas that never bothered you before?

Have you had surgery, an injury, or an accident that healed years ago, yet certain movements still feel restricted?

Maybe you’ve been stretching, getting massages, doing physical therapy, or working on your mobility, but something still feels like it’s pulling, catching, or preventing you from moving freely.

What if the missing piece of the puzzle is your fascia?

Your fascia is a continuous three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and connects the structures throughout your body.

When your body heals from surgery or an injury, it produces collagen to repair the damaged tissue. As scar tissue forms, the surrounding layers of fascia may lose some of their ability to glide and move independently.

And those restrictions don’t necessarily remain isolated to the original injury.

A C-section scar may influence mobility through your abdomen and pelvis.

An old knee injury may change how comfortably you bend, squat, or walk.

Scar tissue around your shoulder may restrict how freely you reach overhead.

An abdominal surgery from decades ago may still be influencing how your torso rotates or extends.

The area where you feel restricted may not be where the restriction begins.

This is why Structural Integration looks at the relationships throughout your entire body rather than focusing exclusively on the area of discomfort.

Through slow, specific hands-on work, Structural Integration addresses restrictions in the fascia, encourages tissue mobility, and supports the natural gliding relationships between layers of connective tissue.

What else can change when your fascia becomes more mobile and its natural hydration-dependent gliding properties are supported?

Have you ever stood up after sitting for a long time and suddenly your ankle hurts so badly you can barely put pressure on it?

You didn’t roll it.
You didn’t fall.
You didn’t injure it.

So why does your ankle hurt?

Think about what happens when you’ve been sitting for hours.

You shift. You cross your legs. You tuck one leg underneath you. You twist your pelvis to one side because you’re simply trying to find a comfortable position and give your body a break.

And sometimes that compensation doesn’t stay where it started.

Your sitting bone can rotate. Your pelvis can become twisted. The relationship between your hip, knee, lower leg and foot changes.

And suddenly you’re feeling it in your ankle.

The ankle may be where you feel the pain. It may not be where the problem started.

Fascia is a continuous 3-dimensional web. A restriction higher up can change the way force travels through your leg and how your foot meets the ground with every step.

You can massage the ankle.
Stretch it.
Ice it.
Strengthen it.
Work on the foot.

But if the ankle is compensating for a restriction somewhere else, you may be working on the symptom without addressing the larger structural pattern.

This is where Structural Integration can change the conversation.

Instead of looking at the ankle as an isolated part, we look at the relationships throughout the body.

What is pulling on this ankle that may have nothing to do with the ankle itself?

If you’ve been dealing with ankle pain that doesn’t make sense—or keeps coming back—maybe it’s time to look beyond the place that hurts.

The hidden piece of the puzzle may be your fascia.

Back pain isn’t always just about your back.

Your feet, hips, pelvis, rib cage, and spine all influence how your body organizes itself when you stand, walk, sit, and move.

When one area stops moving well, another area may begin doing more of the work.

That’s why Structural Integration looks at the relationships throughout your whole body—not only the place that hurts.

Your arm doesn’t begin at your shoulder.

Movement of the arm has a relationship all the way back to your spine—and through the ribs and diaphragm.

So when your elbow feels tight, restricted, or painful, the elbow may only be where you’re noticing the problem.

How well are your ribs moving when you breathe?
Is your diaphragm restricted?
Is your spine able to rotate and move with your arm?

What if the restriction you feel at your elbow actually begins much farther up the chain?

Back pain has a way of working itself into everything.

You think about it when you get dressed. When you bend over. When you sit too long. When you stand back up. You start thinking about which chair you’re going to sit in, how long you’ll be in the car, or whether one wrong movement is going to set it off again.

And after a while, you may find yourself taking painkillers, stretching, getting massages, going to the chiropractor or trying physical therapy—only to have the same low back pain keep coming back.

So what are we missing?

Your low back doesn’t function separately from the rest of your body.

The fascia that surrounds and connects your muscles continues throughout your entire structure. Restrictions through your feet, legs, hips, pelvis, rib cage or spine can change how force travels through your body—and your low back may be the place that keeps taking the load.

Structural Integration works with these restrictions throughout the body, not just where you’re experiencing pain.

Instead of repeatedly chasing low back pain, we look at how your entire structure is organized and where restrictions may be contributing to the pain you keep feeling.

If you’ve tried everything and your back still hurts, maybe it’s time to look at something that hasn’t been touched.

The hidden piece of the puzzle may be your fascia.

When foot and heel pain change the way you walk, every step starts creating a different pattern through your body.

You may have started with heel pain or plantar fasciitis, but after weeks, months, or even years of avoiding the painful area, that altered way of walking can become familiar.

Can your heel comfortably receive your weight?

Can your foot spread against the ground?

Does your ankle move freely when you take a step?

Or have you become so accustomed to avoiding the painful area that you no longer notice how differently you’re walking?

The second session of the Structural Integration Ten Series focuses on the feet and lower legs because this is your foundation.

Working with the fascia of the feet and lower legs can change how your feet meet the ground, how weight moves through them, and what happens when you stand and walk.

If foot pain, heel pain or plantar fasciitis keeps returning, what else has changed in the way you move because your feet hurt?

“If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young.” — Joseph Pilates

But what if the stiffness you feel in your spine isn’t just about your spine?

Do you get out of bed and immediately stretch your back?

Twist in your chair hoping for that one crack that will finally make everything loosen up?

Or bend down and realize your back simply doesn’t move the way it used to?

You may have stretched it. Strengthened it. Had it adjusted. Massaged it. Rolled it. Cracked it.

And yet the stiffness keeps coming back.

So what is actually keeping your spine from moving?

Your spine doesn’t exist separately from the rest of your structure. Fascia is a continuous three-dimensional web connecting your body from head to toe.

Restrictions through your ribs, hips, pelvis, shoulders, legs and even your feet can influence how much movement is available through your back.

This is why Structural Integration doesn’t only focus on the place that feels tight. We look at the relationships throughout your structure that may be asking your spine to compensate.

Because a spine that feels locked may not need more stretching.

It may need more space.

Space through the ribs to breathe and rotate.

Space through the pelvis so the low back doesn’t have to do everything.

Space through the shoulders so the upper back isn’t constantly being pulled forward.

When those relationships begin to change, your spine has more options for movement.

And maybe that’s what Joseph Pilates was pointing toward all those years ago.

What if feeling younger in your body has something to do with how freely you can move through it?

So instead of asking:

“How do I stretch my back more?”

What if the better question is:

“What has been keeping my spine from moving freely in the first place?”
