Who is the Queen of May? Traditionally, May Queens were chosen to represent the coming of spring, and to be an embodiment of the floral earth goddesses who bring fertility, joy, and beauty to the land.

In the way I hold her, she is the both maiden and all-mother, Maia and Gaia, Persephone and Demeter both. She is Freya, Aphrodite, and the Virgin Mary, covered in roses and blossoms.

Fairy princess, dawn maiden, earthly fruiting bounty springing from her body — she is everything bright and beautiful, glorious and glistening, growing and green. She is a rainbow of wildflowers, with a heart made of honey.

What does it mean to be crowned May Queen? Sometimes, she is voted in by a council of witches, on Beltane — but if your birthday falls on May 1st, or you get married on that day, you are clearly the Queen of May! Any gender of person may hold this role, with a deep honoring of all that is femme, fruitful, and flowering.

I’m sharing some of my favorite May maidens from over the years here (with several of my beloved May 1st birthday queens and flower brides!) — and though not all have been made May Queens yet (including myself!), I believe that dancing in a flower garland around a maypole in a meadow qualifies anyone to consider themselves crowned!

Likewise, the Green Man is a role not bounded by gender, and I will do another post on the woodwoses soon — those leafy and mysterious counterparts to the Queen of May! In the meantime, here is “A Prayer to Honor the May Queen” (provenance unknown, please alert me if you know the author?)

“The leaves are budding across the land
on the ash and oak and hawthorn trees.
Magic rises around us in the forest
and the hedges are filled with laughter and love.

Dear lady, we offer you a gift,
a gathering of flowers picked by our hands,
woven into the circle of endless life.
The bright colors of nature herself
blend together to honor you,
Queen of spring,
as we give you honor this day.

Spring is here and the land is fertile,
ready to offer up gifts in your name.
we pay you tribute, our lady,
daughter of the Fae,
and ask your blessing this Beltane.”
